Meksikalı oyuncu Gael Garcia Bernal’ın bu kadar iyi bir oyuncu olmasına şaşırmamak lazım. Çünkü Gael Garcia, annesi (Patricia Bernal) ve babasının (José Ángel Garcia) oyuncu olması nedeniyle küçük yaşlarda kendini sahnelerde buluyor.

30 Ekim 1978 Meksika doğumlu başarılı ve başarılı olduğu kadar yakışıklı olan aktör, 12 yaşında ‘El Abuelo y Yo’ adlı dizide oyunculuğa başlıyor. Daha sonra kısa filmlerde yer alıyor. Oynadığı ‘De Tripas, Corazon’ adlı kısa film, en iyi kısa film Oscar’ına aday oluyor. Londra’da oyunculuk eğitimine devam ediyor.

Son 4 yılda 13 filmde rol alan oyuncuyu Türk izleyicisi 2000 yılı yapımı olan ‘Amores Perros/ Paramparça Aşklar Köpekler’ filmiyle keşfetti. Daha sonra ‘El Crimen del Padre Amaro/Günah’ ile karşımıza çıkan oyuncu son olarak Ernesto Guevara’nın gençliğinin anlatıldığı ‘Diarios de Motocicleta/ Motosiklet Günlüğü’ ve ‘La Mala Educacion/ Kötü Eğitim’ filmleri ile birlikte ‘kadraj’ a girdi.

‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ filmi ile 2001 Venedik Film Festivali Marcello Mastroianni Ödülü, ‘Günah’ filmi ile CFCA Ödülü, ‘Paramparça Aşklar Köpekler’ ile Chicago Uluslararası Film Festivali en iyi oyuncu ‘Silver Hugo’ ödüllerini kazanan aktör, oynadığı filmlerin hemen hemen hepsi ile ödüller kazanmış ve kazanmaya devam edecek gibi gözüküyor.

Onu, son bir kaç yılda çekilen ve İspanyolca konuşulan -neredeyse- bütün iyi filmlerin başrol oyuncusu olarak tanımlamak yanlış olmaz. 30 Ekim 1978, Meksika, Guadalajara doğumlu Gael Garcia Bernal. Annesi Patricia ve babası Jose Angel de oyuncu. 1.68 boyunda, sürmeli iri gözleri ve başarılı oyunculuğuyla çok sayıda yönetmen onunla çalışmaya can atıyor.

Bir çok sinemasever onunla, yurttaşı Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu'nun Amores Perros (Paramparça Aşklar- Köpekler) filminde tanıştı. Görüntüsü bir yana rolündeki başarısıyla da dikkat çekti.

Ardından Y Tu Mama Tambien'de (***** da) arkadaşıyla aynı kadına aşık olan genç, El Crimen del Padre Amaro'da (Günah) "cinsel perhiz" yemini ettiği halde köyün güzel kızını sevmekten kendini alamayan rahip rolündeydi.

Filmekimi'nde gösterilen ve kısa bir süre sonra vizyona da gerecek olan iki filmin başrolünde de o var. Pedro Almodovar'ın Kötü Eğitim'i (La Mala Educacione) ve Walter Salles'in Motosiklet Günlüğü (Diarios de Motocicleta). Salles'in filminde Che Guevara'yı canlandırıyor Bernal. Üstelik bu onun, efsane devrimci Che'yi oynadığı ilk film de değil. David Atwood imzalı Fidel'de de yine "Che" rolünde kamera önünde boy göstermişti.

OYUNCULUĞA ÇOCUKKEN BAŞLADI

Gael Garcia Bernal'in oyunculuk serüveni aslında onun çocukluğuna uzanıyor. Henüz küçük bir çocukken oyuncu olan anne ve babasıyla aynı sahneyi paylaştı. Bernal, 11 yaşına geldiğinde Tereza adlı televizyon dizisinde Salma Hayek'le birlikte rol aldı. Bir kaç yıl sonra da El Abuelo y yo adlı bir başka televizyon dizisinde oynadı.

Bernal, Antonio Urrutia'nın, 1996 yılında kısa film dalında Oscar Ödülü'ne aday gösterilen De Tripas Corazon ve Rodrigo Pla'nın El Ojo E La Nuca adlı filmlerinde de rol aldı.

Bernal'in uluslararası alanda ilk önemli çıkışını yaptığı film, Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu'nun yönettiği Amores Perros (Paramparça Aşklar- Köpekler) oldu. Bu filmden sonra da Bernal'in önünde deyim yerindeyse bütün kapılar açıldı.

Ama o bunlarla yetinmeyip İngiltere'nin başkenti Londra'daki Central School of Speech and Drama'da eğitim gördü.

Şu sıralar, İspanya, Meksika, Arjantin kısacası ana dili İspanyolca olan bir çok ülkede sinema yönetmenlerinin en gözde oyuncusu Gael Garcia Bernal. Büyük olasılıkla, dev bütçeli Hollywood yapımlarında başrol alması için de uzun süre geçmesi gerekmeyecek.

Clearly, adhering to boundaries is just not in the DNA of a free spirit like the 27-year-old Garcia Bernal. Since becoming an international star at 23 on the strength of back-to-back art-house hits Amores Perros and Y Tu Mama Tambien, the Mexican actor has roamed in search of parts that defy easy categorization. He returned to Mexico to play a transgressive Catholic priest (The Crime of Padre Amaro); crisscrossed South America as the legendary revolutionary Che Guevara (The Motorcycle Diaries); and traveled to Spain to portray a revenge-seeking drag queen (Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education).In this month's, The King, his first American indie, he stars as an ex-naval officer from Texas who responds to being rejected by his father (William Hurt) by sleeping with his half sister (Pell James). "The father-son relationship, incest - the story deals with [classically tragic] issues that I'm interested in," the actor explains over lunch in Manhattan.

That curiosity is at the heart of who Garcia Bernal is, according to Diego Luna, his closest childhood friend and Y Tu Mama Tambien costar: "He's a cool guy to be around because he's always challenging you to take [an idea] somewhere else, always asking himself questions."

Although his string of ever more serious parts may not show it, Garcia Bernal loves to geek out on Charlie Chaplin and Monty Python movies. So when director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) asked him to take a quirky comic turn in the surrealist mind warp The Science of Sleep, due out this August, he flipped. "I was like, 'Oh man, yes! Please! Let's do something funny!" the actor recalls. As the impish Gondry says, "Gael, he's like a machine of happiness."

Garcia Bernal fell into the family business by happenstance. By age 12, he was getting work on Mexican television, including a stint on the soap El Abuelo y Yo with Luna. Even when he became the first Mexican to enroll in London's prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama, it felt like a game. "I knew I wanted to act all my life because I found it really fun to do," he explains. "But I didn't know I wanted it as a career."

His attitude changed in 1999 when he landed the role of the desperate delinquent Octavio in Perros. "With that film, I kind of [entered] the elitist bubble of cinema," the actor recalls. Then, amid the acclaim for Alfonso Cuaron's racy Y Tu Mama, Garcia Bernal was singled out for his intensity and sex appeal. "I don't know what makes a sex symbol, but I have neither muscle nor height, so it's nice to make it there," the 5-foot-6 actor says with a boyish laugh.

The Gael hype only grew when, as a presenter at the 2003 Oscars, he threw out the Academy's text and read an antiwar statement paraphrasing Frida Kahlo instead. That gesture offered a glimpse of the actor's strong convictions, which have led him to steadfastly refuse the stereotypical parts Hollywood has offered: crooks, gangsters, or "the good Latino from East L.A. who goes to Malibu for a better future," he says. "I don't [act] to make a business out of it, I do it because the films are gonna be good."

Besides, Garcia Bernal is thriving without Hollywood. At the moment, he is editing his directorial debut, Deficit, about rich Mexican kids facing "the end of impunity." It's the first project from Canana Films, the production company Garcia Bernal and Luna helped launch. Over the summer, he's heading to Brazil and Argentina to shoot the romantic drama El Pasado. Then this fall he'll be back in theaters costarring alongside Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in Babel, a tale of intertwined tragedies from Perros director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. If Garcia Bernal appears all over the map, that's simply a testament to his success. "I just want to keep on doing what I like - developing stories, traveling, dreaming of living in other places," he says, "I want to keep up that insanity. It's one of the healthiest things I can do for myself."

Jason Bourne to Face Gael Garcia Bernal?

The Bourne Ultimatum, the third installment of the hit action series, began shooting this week in Tangier, but it is still without a worthy nemesis for its amnesiac spy hero, Jason Bourne.

The Hollywood Reporter says that an offer has gone out to Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal to take on the role, though talks have not yet begun. Bernal, whose credits include Amores perros, Y tu mamá también and The Motorcycle Diaries, is currently in theaters with Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep.

Matt Damon reprises his title role, and Joan Allen and Julia Stiles are also back, as is Paul Greengrass, who directed the 2004 sequel The Bourne Supremacy. David Strathairn (Good Night, And Good Luck.) is new to the cast.

The story centers on Bourne uncovering mysteries of his past, which puts him in the cross-hairs of a superkiller. In addition to Tangier, shooting locations include Madrid, Paris, New York, London and Riga.

Walter Salles’in The Motorcycle Diaries (Motosiklet Günlükleri) adlı çalışmasında Che Guevara’nın gençliğini oynadı. Fazla uzun sayılmayacak mesleki kariyerinde deyim yerindeyse hep ses getiren filmlerde rol alan Meksikalı aktör Gael Garcia Bernal, kısa bir süre sonra Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu'nun Babil (Babel) adlı filmiyle sinemalarımıza konuk olacak.

“Hoşuma giden bir işi yaparken ünlü olduğum için çok şanslıyım” diyor Gael Garcia Bernal, “Şöhreti ben istemedim ama farklı öyküler anlatabilme ve sevdiğim işi sürdürebilme lüksünü bana getirdi. Bu yüzden şikayet edemem. Doğrusu biz aktörler çok talihli insanlarız.”

Genç aktörün bugüne kadar en çok yakınlık duyduğu karakter ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ (***** da) adlı filmdeki Julio olmuş. "Tıpkı Julio gibi ben de orta sınıf Meksikalı bir aileden geliyorum. Julio’nun duygusal yolculuğu hepimizin yaşadığı türdendi. Diğer filmlerdeki rollerimin hepsi olağanüstü yolculuklardı ama o filmdeki hepimizin yakından tanıdığı sıradan bir yolculuktu” diye anlatıyor bu tecrübesini.

Bernal'e göre “Sırf oynamış olmak için film yapılmaz.” “Hayatın gerçek anlamı insanın yaptığı işten keyif almasıdır. İlgimi çeken öykülerde oynamak bana inanılmaz keyif veriyor. Hayatımdan da, yaptığım işten de zevk alıyorum.

1996 'da Londra’daki Lisan ve Drama Okuluna kaydını yaptırdı. Öğrenimine devam ederken para kazanabilmek için inşaatlarda çalıştı. Cuba Libre adını taşıyan bir kokteyl barda barmenlik yaptı.

Bernal şu sıralar bir yandan Michel Gondry’nin yönettiği “The Science of Sleep”in gösterime girmesini beklerken, bir yandan da Brezilyalı yönetmen Hector Babenco’nun yöneteceği “Pasado”nun ön prodüksiyonunda çalışıyor. Bu arada ilk yönetmenlik denemesi “Deficit”e hazırlanıyor.

Bu hafta 'Babil'in Santiago'su olarak izleyeceğimiz, son yılların en çabuk parlayan genç yıldızlarından Gael Garcia Bernal, fiziğinden çok yeteneğine güveniyor

Yükselişi hızlı oldu. İlk önemli filmi 'Amores Perros/ Paramparça Aşklar Köpekler'le dikkati çekti, arkası da çorap söküğü gibi geldi. Bu hafta onu, bu filmin yönetmeni ve kendisi gibi Meksikalı Meksikalı Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu'nun imzasını taşıyan 'Babel/ Babil' ile izleyeceğiz. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, bundan beş yıl önce gene Cannes'da heyecan yaratan filmi 'Amores Perros'la 'ölüm üçlemesi'ni başlatırken, Gael Garcia Bernal'ı da oynatmıştı. Araya '21 Grams' girdi. Şimdi üçlemenin üçüncü filmindeki karakterlerden birini oynamak için gene Meksikalı aktörü seçtiğini görüyoruz. Ama artık Bernal, ilk önemli filminde oynayan bir heveskâr değil, uluslararası bir yıldız.
Varlığından ilk kez haberdar olduğumuzda 22 yaşındaydı, şimdi 27'sinde. Guadalajara'da doğdu. Babası Jose Angel Garcia ve annesi Patricia Bernal oyuncuydu. Cuba Libre'de barmenlik yaptı, Hoxton'daki bir butikte de modellik. İnşaatlarda duvarcı olarak çalıştı. İngilizleri sevmiş ama biraz arkadaş sıkıntısı çektiği anlaşılıyor. Gerçi arkadaşları varmış ama, telefon edip de 'Bu akşam programın var mı?' deyince herkes tembellik edip evde kalmayı yeğliyormuş. Oysa, "Mexico City'de 20 farklı toplumsal yaşamı olan 20 farklı kişi olabilirim."
Durum böyle olunca, Meksika ve Latin Amerika'da çalışmayı ve seyahat etmeyi tercih ediyor. İnsana evinin büyüdüğü hissini veriyormuş. Seyahat de özgürlüğünü korumasına yardımcı oluyormuş. Ancak, kendinden başkasına aldırmayan biri değil. Siyasi fikirleri doğrultusunda ciddi çalışmaları var.
Bernal, Londra'da akşamları gezecek arkadaş ararken, Inarritu onu aradı. İlk önemli filmi 'Amores Perros'tan (2000) bir yıl sonra da Alfonso Cuaron'un yönettiği cüretli yol filmi 'Y tu mama tambien/***** da' (2001) geldi. Ama kadınken güzelmiş. "Çok emek verdim. Ve ilk kez böyle bir hırsa kapıldım: Güzel görünecektim, o kadar. Herkesin önünde makyajımı yapabilirdim. Rahatlatıcı bir duygu."
İnsanların kadın kılığındayken ona farklı davranmasına da hâlâ şaşırıyor. Filmde onunla birlikte çalışan, kılık değiştirmesini görenlere bile. "Bir şey istersem rahatça uzanabileyim diye her şeyi yakınıma çekerlerdi. Ne istesem yaparlardı. Çünkü kadındım!"
Aynı yıl Almodovar'ın filmindekilerle taban tabana zıt bir karakteri, 'Diarios de motocicleta/Motosiklet Günlükleri'nde (2004) Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, yani Che'yi oynadı. Böylece, iki yıl önceki 'Fidel' mini dizisiyle birlikte, Che'ye iki kez can vermiş oldu.
Kendisine Hollywood damgası vurulmasını istemiyor. Hayatından memnun. Meksika filmlerinde, Latin Amerika filmlerinde, bağımsız filmlerde oynamayı tercih ediyor. Ya da Londra'ya gidip sahneye çıkıyor, Lorca'nın 'Kanlı Düğün'ünde oynuyor. Çok iyi dans ediyor, hele salsa... Aktör olmadan önce Huicholes Kızılderililerine okuma yazma öğretirmiş. Sonra Marcos Zapatista'nın asilerini destekleyerek, Chiapas devletinin barışçıl yükselişine destek oldu. Meksika'daki 1 Mayıs gösterilerine katılıyor. Hong Kong'daki Dünya Ticaret Örgütü zirvesinde Meksikalı mısır ekicilerinin sorunlarını dile getirdi. G8 zirvesi sırasında Edinburgh'daki protestolarda yer aldı. Oscar töreninde Irak savaşı aleyhine konuşmakta zerrece tereddüt etmedi.

Gael önceki gün 20.Guadalajara Ululslararası Kitap Fuarı'na katıldı.Jose Saramago ile birlikte The Intermittence of Death kitabını okuyarak Guadalajara Çocuk hastanesi kanserli çocuklar yararına 475bin paund toplanmasını sağladılar.

Gael Garcia Bernal’in oyunculuk serüveni aslında onun çocukluğuna uzanıyor. Henüz küçük bir çocukken oyuncu olan anne ve babasıyla aynı sahneyi paylaştı. Bernal, 11 yaşına geldiğinde Tereza adlı televizyon dizisinde Salma Hayek’le birlikte rol aldı. Bir kaç yıl sonra da El Abuelo y yo adlı bir başka televizyon dizisinde oynadı. Central School of Speech and Drama gibi prestijli bir okula kabul edilen ilk Meksikalı olan Garcia, o dönemde çeşitli reklamlarda oynayarak ve Natalie Portman’la çıkarak gününü gün etti. İngilizce, İtalyanca, İspanyolca ve Fransızca biliyor oluşu oyunculuk anlamında kendisine birçok kapı açsa da zar zor para kazandığı dönemlerde bile sevmediği projelerde oynamayı reddetti.

Rol model olarak Klaus Kinski, Daniel Day-Lewis ve Marcello Mastroianni’yi alan entelektüel oyuncu şu sıralar, İspanya, Meksika, Arjantin kısacası ana dili İspanyolca olan birçok ülkede ve tabii ki Avrupa’daki sinema yönetmenlerinin en gözde oyuncusu.
