“Aman Doktor!...”da, alıştığımız gibi, yine patetik, ağrı kesivi bağımlısıbir karakteri canlandıran Helena Bonham Carter, daha şöhret olmadan önce çevresinde Kraliyet ailesinden olduğu gibi mitler yaratılmış bir aktris. Helena’nın uzun yıllar kostüm dramalarda ve dönem filmlerinde yer aldıktan sonra, birden sıradışı karakterle canlandırmaya başlamasının bu dedikodulardan kurtulma arzusuyla ilgisi olabilir...

Helena Bonham Carter’ın oyunculuk kariyerinin bir bölümü ABD’de kraliyet ailesinden olduğuna dair çıkarılan dedikodularla mücadele ederek geçti. Neyse ki, Carter özellikle fight club ve sonrasında oyunculuk yeteneğini kanıtladı da, Amerikan kamuoyu bu dedikoduları bir kenara bırakıp, aktirisn işlerinden konuşmaya başladı.

Bu arada kariyerine ara vermeyerek, biraz da dönem filmlerinden kurtulmaya çalışarak “Butter” (1994), “Mighty Aphrodite” (1995), “Margaret's Museum” (1995), “Twelfth Night: Or What You Will” (1996), “Portraits chinois” (1996), “The Wings of the Dove” (1997), “Keep the Aspidistra Flying” (1997), “The Petticoat Expeditions” (1997) “Merlin” (1998), “The Revengers' Comedies” (1998), “The Theory of Flight” (1998) gibi filmlerde yer aldı. “The Wings of the Dove” ve “Merlin”le Altın Küre’ye aday olsa da, asıl çıkışını 1999 yapımı “Dövüş Kulübü”nde (“Fight Club”) canlandırdığı, sinema tarihinini en orijinal karakterlerinden biri olan, karizmatik ‘cool’ Marla Singer’la yaptı. “Maymunlar Gezegeni”nde (“Planet of the Apes”, 2001), adeta “maymun olsam da karizmatiğim” dediği Ari rolünde yeteneğini bir kez daha ortaya koyan Helena’nın, bu hafta vizyonda izleyeceğimiz filmi “Aman Doktor!..”, aslında ülkemizi biraz geç ziyaret eden, 2001 yapımı bir film. Yine ağrı kesici müptelası, sorunlu bir karakter olan Susan Ivey’le karşımıza çıkan Carter, Guy Pearce’la birlikte “Till Human Voices Wake Us”da (2001), hemen ardından da Körfez Savaşı’nı konu alan, Michael Keatonla başrolü paylaştığı TV filmi “Live From Baghdad”da oynadı.

Şu günlerde Tim Burton’ın yeni filmi “Big Fish” (2003) için Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Alison Lohman, Steve Buscemi, Danny DeVito gibi iddialı oyuncularla birlikte ter döken Helena Bonham Carter’ın, magazinden kaçan, genelde küçük ama zeki filmleri iddialı projelere tercih ettiğine bakarsak, Hollywood’da daha fazla yükselemeyeceğini tahmin etmek zor değil. Onun bu tavrı, bağımsız projeleri üretenleri ve de takip edenleri, hiç şüphesiz çok sevindiriyordur. Yıllarca kostüm dramalarda rol aldıktan sonra, aktrisin rotasını bu denli değiştirmesinde, Kraliyet ailesine mensup olmadığını kanıtlama arzusunun ne kada retkisi olduğunu bilemeyiz; ancak bu dedikodulardan iyice sıkıldığını adeta feryat ettiği açık: “Şu Edward dönemi kadını imajından nefret ediyorum. Herkesi, ever herkesi şok etmek istiyorum.”

At 40, Helena Bonham Carter seems to be having the time of her life as Tim Burton’s weirdo muse

Helena Bonham Carter is tripping down a Hampstead street on a busy bank-holiday lunchtime, a celebrity-spotter’s dream. In a sea of groomed yummy mummies in smock tops, she looks a cross between BoPeep and Marge Simpson with a tequila hangover; which is to say, she looks whimsical, retro and ever so slightly louche. She has always been contemptuous of her prettiness, has never believed in it; the mad hair and car-crash ensembles have been her way of avoiding embarrassing flattery (she prefers teasing), part of the armour she has employed since her first big role, when she was cast, as a “terrified” teenager, by Trevor Nunn as Lady Jane Grey in 1984. The voice, too, seems a disguise, so crazy-posh in its plummiest depths, you wonder for a second if it’s exaggerated for a bit of fun. She has flakes of mascara beneath her eyes, an air of having been up too late or too early (probably both, since she is currently filming Sweeney Todd and has a three-year-old son).

She strikes me as a woman who has hit her stride after a lot of false starts, one who is enjoying being 40, a rare sentiment among those accustomed to admiration for their dewy, youthful beauty. Bonham Carter’s six-year partnership with the director Tim Burton, father of her son Billy Ray – they are kindred spirits, with their gothic taste and aversion to combs – seems to have given her the confidence that was her birthright. She is, after all, the great-granddaughter of the former prime minister Herbert Asquith and a member of a great Liberal clan. Or maybe she was just slow to grow up, stalled by her closeness to her parents, with whom she lived in Golders Green until she was 30, and by starting big-time acting young, and so becoming an adorable, talented baby for various mentors. For chocolate-box romantics, A Room with a View will always be her defining movie, but she has spent the past decade escaping the shade cast by Lucy Honeychurch’s parasol, and emerged as an actress in her prime. Clearly born to play schlock-horror spoofs and clever bluestockings, Bonham Carter is metamorphosing into a great English maverick, heading for a feisty middle age of which EM Forster would be proud, and with more in common with her indomitable grandmother Violet Bonham Carter than she cares to acknowledge.

Today, she is so happy with the sunshine and her boys, and whatever treat rustles inside that Whistles bag slung over her shoulder, that she is almost skipping. She is dressed in a 1950s-style sundress and pink fluffy cardigan, with vintage shades; her hair is piled high in a bird’s nest studded with blue velvet bows, the work of her best friend and movie hairstylist, Carol, who has been with her since the earliest Merchant Ivory bouffants. “She is the best person at making your hair look as if it hasn’t been washed for years,” she gushes, as if that might be what anybody else required from their hairdresser. Her hair is in character today, but you couldn’t really tell. She also has the filthiest fingernails you’ve seen since primary school. Like the hairdo, they are the result of playing Mrs Lovett – maker of mud pies, and much worse – against Johnny Depp’s Sweeney Todd in Burton’s movie, which is shooting in London. The odd couple live together in ahouse around the corner, but, despite rumours to the contrary, it boasts no secret passage between separate dwellings. “No underground tunnel,” she confirms, “though maybe we should have a bridge of sighs. Tim is sighing a lot at the moment.”

It must be tough to stop being a couple on set, I say. She rolls her eyes. “The problem is that we don’t stop. Tim sighs loudly. I say, ‘What? What? What ** I doing wrong?’ Johnny looks away diplomatically, or starts dusting his razor overattentively. We’re both banned from discussing the film at home. It’s number one on the list of commandments I’ve written down.” Since they fell in love on Planet of the Apes, he has cast her in four films, including Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “After this, I wouldn’t work with him again,” she hoots, lying her socks off. Actually, her admiration for him seeps into every corner of our conversation, and, having spent 10 minutes with her, you can tell they are a good match: smart, alert and cackling with laughter at silly jokes. “Now I have Tim, Johnny and Billy all doing poo-poo jokes together. What a nightmare!”

For all her success, the early Bonham Carter seemed a troubled creature, living at home too long, clearly devastated by her father’s stroke when she was 13, falling in and out of relationships, including one with Kenneth Branagh. She was always articulate and outwardly assured, but still a little lost. Burton (and Billy) seems to have fixed that, and not just by making her his muse. “It looks like a clever ruse,” she admits, “getting together with a film director. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Tim is unbelievably disciplined about employing me only if I ** absolutely right. For Sweeney Todd, it was like I had to be more right than anyone else; it was ‘in spite of’, instead of ‘because of’, being his girlfriend. I know a lot of actresses will say it’s because I was sleeping with him, but it’s not true. I had to audition for Stephen Sondheim, for God’s sake! When it’s all over, I’ll tell the whole saga of how I got the part. It was like being in How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? – so painful and so acute that Tim said, ‘We cannot watch this programme. We are actually living it, and it is hideous.’ ”

We are meant to be discussing her new film, Hans Canosa’s Conversations with Other Women, a savvy two-hander, co-starring Aaron Eckhart, about a divorced couple who are still in love and meet again at a wedding. “It’s about closure,” she says. “It’s a requiem for a relationship. My character needs to work out if she was right to leave him, and she does – she has moved on, but he hasn’t moved on a minute.” There was a time when she seemed to crave just this sort of role: modern, complex, sexual, mature. Of all those words, the last is the one that makes her shriek: “I have never felt mature. Anyone who knows me would agree ... Sure, I’m more interesting than when I was 20, but sadly the parts get exponentially less interesting. This was an exception.” At least age has allowed her to make her own rules: requests for her to bare more than her soul for the camera are greeted with supreme caution.

Billy was nine months old when Bonham Carter shot Conversations. She had regained her body shape, but the sex scenes were written as “head-to-toe naked”, and she refused. “Even then, I wondered if it was necessary for my boobs to be on show.” She pauses. “Though it’s true that when people have sex, they don’t usually keep their clothes on ... It was my idea to get undressed under the covers. Otherwise, my character had to be naked and get into bed, and I said, ‘Not if she’s self-conscious about her age! Certainly not when she knows he’s now with a f***ing dancer!’”

In all her musings about film, its technical aspect seems firmly stuck in mind. “We shot in two weeks,” she says approvingly of Conversations, “and on video, so we could shoot for ever – with film, you are limited to 11 minutes.” Her interest no doubt derives from sharing her life with a man whose business is light meters and special effects, especially on an extravaganza such as Sweeney Todd. “This film has made me see that I ** just a cog,” she says. “Actors can get egotistical and want to use whatever prop. I’m just as bad. ‘Ooh, Tim,’ I’ll say, ‘what about this?’ But if it doesn’t help the story, forget it. I have been disobedient in the past, but I have understood that if you don’t hit your mark, you won’t get the light or you’ll be blocked.”

Sweeney Todd, his first musical, has been a high-pressure adventure for Burton, spiced with the drama of the production being halted during the illness of Depp’s daughter, now thankfully recovered. For its leading lady, the breakthrough has been learning to sing. “One audition, I sung for four hours, and Tim said, ‘No, no, that’s enough. Will you stop?’ I’ve had nine months of singing daily. Now I’ve got this skill, this instrument, and it makes me feel finally like a proper actor. I feel more self-respect.” That elusive quality is one she lacked in the past, leading to “huge complexes”, including one about not having gone to drama school. After A Room with a View, she visited a few establishments, including Bristol Old Vic, where the intention seemed to be to break her down, then rebuild her. “I thought, I won’t have fun here, so forget it. Anyway, I’ve given up the regrets, and that is liberating. F*** it. Whatever.”

Her career took off from a single photograph. In 1985, Tatler was running a feature on people who looked as if they came from a different era. Bonham Carter’s cousin Virginia was to be the Titian-haired preRaphaelite. When she dropped out, good old “Hels” was asked to step in. “It was only because I had long hair,” she says, seemingly nudging herself to remember how lucky that early break had been. “My whole career boils down to how Carol did my hair on that shoot. For most of the 1980s, I was just ‘the girl with the hair’.” She was keen to start work. After her father’s paralysing illness, his youngest child felt she ought to have an independence and an income to call her own. She laughs wickedly. “Besides, I thought, while he’s in intensive care, he won’t care what I’m doing, so I’ll get an agent!”

In the close-knit Merchant Ivory troupe, Bonham Carter became the adopted treasure, nicknamed “little thing” (in A Room with a View, Cecil Vyse calls Lucy “little thing”). Was it a comfortable family? “No, it was eccentric, Ismail never off the phone, and Ruth [Prawer Jhabvala] just typing, typing, existing on coffee and sugar, the thinnest person you ever saw.”

In her mid-thirties, Bonham Carter sometimes sounded bored and disenchanted with acting. It was all too easy to assume she was feeling suffocated by period costume, but she says the malaise, now passed, was deeper. “I didn’t think it was a serious way of making a living. Actually, I was never fed up with those period parts: they are good roles for women, all leads. I think the press got tired of me in them. It was unfair, because the dresses may have been the same, but the characters were very different.” Did she feel trapped? “Not really; it’s a myth. Directors don’t typecast you – David Fincher gave me Fight Club. Tim never typecast me. The first thing he said to me was, ‘I have a feeling that you ought to be an ape.’ Besides, you’re always going to have an encapsulating headline – for me, first it was ‘Posh great-granddaughter of PM’, which I’d been oblivious to.” Her mother, Elena, always reminded her she was also half Spanish, a bit Jewish, as red-blooded as blue-blooded; her father “pedantically” pointed out she wasn’t a real aristocrat, since Asquith had once been a down-to-earth Yorkshireman.

The highbrow Liberal clan into which she was born sounds chaotic: brilliant, sweethearted, arriving to help her mother and breaking everything in the kitchen because they were all so undomesticated. The party leader Jo Grimond, husband of her aunt Laura, she recalls fondly as “a gentle giant with a huge head, very deaf and somewhat remote. When we made family visits, he tended to hide in the kitchen.” Her adored father, Raymond, who died in 2004, was the least political of the siblings. She has still to locate her own social cause; though her cousin Jane, a Lib Dem peer, is “always tying to enlist me”, she has so far wriggled free.

Nor does she lobby much for parts. Her last effort at being proactive proved a disaster. She wrote a passionate letter to Peter Kosminsky, asking to be seen for Cathy in his 1992 Wuthering Heights (the part went to Juliette Binoche). “Actually, it was more of an essay on the whole of Emily Brontë, and he said, you must come in. I was wearing dungarees – probably not the best thing to wear to an audition for a romantic heroine. I was all wrong, and he was fumbling around, and I said, ‘Come on! What is it?’ He said, ‘Um, I think you’re a bit dumpy, that’s all.’ ” She screeches with laughter. “Luckily, I didn’t hurl myself into bulimia.”

Her great leap into the 20th century was Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite (1995), in which she played a cool, unfaithful wife. “I didn’t feel happy in the part; I wasn’t mature enough. She was very sophisticated, and I didn’t really like her. I have to like my characters. I love Mrs Lovett – she makes pies out of humans, but she’s fantastic!” After Allen, she went back into a corset to play the scheming Kate Croy in The Wings of the Dove (1997), which won her an Oscar nomination. “I couldn’t not do it, the part was too good.” Whether consciously or not, she has now mastered enough gritty or comic parts to counterbalance the implausibly pretty ones: a woman with motor-neurone disease in The Theory of Flight (1998); the mother of autistic sons in Magnificent 7 (2005); as a voice in the animated Corpse Bride and Wallace & Gromit – The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Her next project looks set to be Eleanor & Colette, with Susan Sarandon, the story of a mentally ill woman campaigning to win rights over her medication.

Recently, A Room with a View was on television when the Burton-Bonham Carters were at home, and she cringed while he laughed. Isn’t he charmed by the vision of Edwardian femininity? She splutters. “He’s not charmed at all! He just talks about my hyperactive eyebrows. For Mrs Lovett, he says, ‘Don’t move your caterpillars; don’t move your hands.’ He takes the piss out of me most of the time.” The irreverence seems to have been just what she needed, yet, for all her late blossoming, Bonham Carter is still unable to watch herself on screen. “I go into a massive depression. It takes four days to recover, and every time, I say, ‘I’m giving up acting.’ I’m very self-critical. I hate everything – how bad I look, how bad my performance is. In acting, I’m trying to get away from myself, and when I see the work, I think, ‘Oh no, after all that effort, it’s still me!’ ”

The only film she has been able to watch is Planet of the Apes, in which she wears a chimp suit, a disguise she enjoyed more than all the wasp-waisted constructions or even her own funky-fairy wardrobe; and one that taught her something. “It’s the only film in which I can understand what people might see in me. My eyes are quite kind. And quite spirited.”

As for her darling son, she insists he will not follow her into the industry she half loves and half scorns, and intermittently plans to escape. “Absolutely not – don’t go there, mate! He can be a lawyer or an accountant.” Given little Billy Ray’s arty provenance, his celebrity contacts and his parents’ collection of kitsch sunglasses, civilian life seems somehow unlikely.

THE MOMENT you set eyes on Helena Bonham Carter, you can't help but be drawn in. An actress with a timeless aura about her, she's seemingly as fresh as the day she sauntered on to the screen as the delicious Lucy Honeychurch in A Room With A View. While her skin still has an innate purity to it, it's her almond-shaped brown eyes, both mournful and full of curiosity, and her lips - ever ready with a wicked smile - that will get you. Of course, you can't help but study the nest of hair. Balanced on top of her head with gravity-defying grace, it's little wonder one interviewer recently noted she looked like "a cross between Bo Peep and Marge Simpson". Then there's the well-heeled accent, occasionally pronouncing "yeah" as "yah" in a way that's so Eighties, it's almost fashionable again.

I can't put it better than Paul Bettany, her co-star from The Heart Of Me, when he dubbed her: "barking mad, keen as mustard and funny as f**k". Madness does seem to be a recurring theme in her work, though she comes across as quite sane. If Bonham Carter's eccentric, in that it's only in a delightful, charming way. Her fashion sense - all fluffy cardigans, frilly blouses and crumpled ankle-length skirts - is so idiosyncratic that you may have trouble deciding if she's retro-chic or just simply a bag lady made good.

Now 40, the woman once nicknamed "little thing" by the Merchant/Ivory troupe she began her career with has finally grown up. Six years into her relationship with director Tim Burton, the prince of darkness behind such films as Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands, she finally seems to have found her soul mate - and not just because, as she once joked, "we both don't believe in combs".

advertisementThey evidently share the same quirky outlook on life, typified by the fact that when they first met, rather than move in together, Burton bought the house next door to Bonham Carter's home in London's Belsize Park and knocked it through. They now share this extended living space with their three-year-old son Billy Ray, who is evidently being tutored in the way of his parents' Gothic tastes. His mother lets slip that recently she let him watch Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban - in preparation for her own role in the forthcoming fifth film of the franchise. "It was the one where his aunt blows up into a huge balloon and floats out of the window," she giggles. "That was really traumatic!" She then realises how this comes across. "It was a mistake," she says, more sombrely.

Right now, Bonham Carter is "having a really nice life". As insurance, she knocks on the wooden table that divides us in the London hotel room where we're ensconced. For starters, she only works when she wants, "doing things that are different and well-written". Her latest film, Conversations With Other Women, is just this. Pitting her opposite Aaron Eckhart - they're known only as Woman and Man - they play a once-married couple, now divorced, who reunite at a New York wedding and immediately fall under each other's spell.

"I think she's still not quite clear why she broke up with him. There's a lot of hurt involved, but it ended so badly, they never really discussed it. There's a question mark over the relationship, a What if?' And then she's reminded basically what a pain he is. I think it's what in America they call closure' that she's seeking." She pulls a face. "I hate that word."

The film's novelty is that it's entirely split-screen, much like Mike Figgis' Timecode, so that even when the actors are in the same room they stand divided. "I'm on one side, then if you get bored of me you can look at Aaron on the other side," laughs Bonham Carter, who enthuses over this experimental conceit. "I thought the style would upstage the content, but it doesn't," she says. "It's really interesting to watch."

Director Hans Canosa uses the concept well, at times allowing flashbacks from the couple's past life together to play on one side of the screen in parallel to the contemporary action. The set-up for this virtual two-hander meant that both actors had the camera on them at all times. It's as close as she's ever got to acting on stage. "It had a sort of energy as if we were doing it live," she agrees.

Shot in just 13 days - the fastest shoot Bonham Carter has ever enjoyed - "it meant there was more time acting than waiting, which is often the opposite case with most films". She evidently preferred the experience to working on the Harry Potter film, The Order Of The Phoenix, in which she gets to play the "mad, sadistic witch" Bellatrix Lestrange.

"It was the other extreme," she says. "That was six weeks and I had about five lines you just camp there and every so often do a bit of acting in front of green screens." Given the dotty impression she makes, I wonder if it's this that led to her Potter debut. "I don't know," she muses. "I obviously do madness quite well. I'm not sure. I've never done sadism, actually."

Until now, that is. When we meet, Bonham Carter is in the final throes of finishing off Sweeney Todd, Burton's big screen version of Stephen Sondheim's musical about the murderous London barber. With old Burton favourite Johnny Depp in the title role, Carter plays his accomplice Mrs Lovett. "She's bonkers," laughs Carter. "She makes pies out of human hearts!" It's her fourth live-action film for Burton, though as she says, "it's unlike anything any of us have shot. People keep on breaking out into song!" Does she have a good voice? "I don't know," she says, a little timidly. "Obviously it was good enough for the part. I surprised myself. I didn't think I could sing. I sort of thought, F**k it! I'm going to go and learn to sing and try and get this part.' Apparently I have, but I'm not one to judge, I'd say."

Well aware that most actresses will be jealous of her frequent parts for Burton, silently accusing her of sleeping her way to the top, Bonham Carter is keen to stress this isn't the case. "It can't be a given. He does make me audition. I have to doubly prove that I'm right for it. But there's a sexy formality to it. He'll come to me and say, I'll be very honoured if you would consider playing the part of' This is two weeks after I've done the audition - there's nothing said at the dinner table." This time, the process - which included trying out in front of Sondheim himself - was the most rigorous she has ever endured. "It was merciless," she sighs. "It was really quite stressful. I wouldn't recommend it for any relationship!"

They first met on the set of Planet Of The Apes, Burton's much-maligned 2001 "re-imagining" of the Charlton Heston classic. Cast as an ape, in one of several attempts by Bonham Carter to distance herself from her Merchant/Ivory image, she maintains they didn't get together during the shoot, pointing out he never even saw her face for five months due to the simian prosthetics she was forced to wear. "It was genuinely after," she says. "Everyone thinks that everyone gets together on movie sets. It was when we were selling the movie some months after. We went to dinner with my brother anyway, it's a long personal story that I don't think is particularly appropriate." She tails off for a second, aware she almost said too much.

She reunited with Burton for the 2003 fable Big Fish, which dealt with the relationship between a son and his dying father. She played dual roles, including the first witch of her career, but the release of the film was overshadowed by the death of her own father, Raymond, who passed away two days before the film's UK premiere in 2003. A former Merchant banker, he had been paralysed since Bonham Carter was a teenager, after a routine ear operation had left him unable to walk and semi-blind.

"It had a real resonance, the film," she murmurs. "I knew Dad would love it. And it was really cathartic. Me and my brothers were sitting there. It might seem a bit of a travesty, as if you'd been up close to the real thing, you might think it was a bit sentimental. But it really stood up and it ended up being really healing - he'd been ill for so long, Dad. He really wanted to die."

Bonham Carter followed this with a small role as Mrs Bucket in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, as well as voicing the lead in Burton's ghoulish stop-motion animated tale, Corpse Bride. "Working together always has its stresses - and joys," she says. "It's always a surprise. I think he forgets how much I talk. And I forget that I basically should obey him at work. I don't obey him at home, so I forget that I have to at work." Yet she admits her relationship with Burton and becoming a parent has helped her settle down and grow in confidence. "As everyone says, it changes your perspective and proportions. It makes you much less serious about yourself. You take yourself less seriously." So did she suffer from this? "I think without meaning to, yeah, over the work."

If motherhood has made her more relaxed - "there are a lot of good things about it," she confirms. "Only good, really" - it evidently helps that they don't live in Hollywood. "Definitely," she nods. "No, don't like that place. Neither of us do. He hates it - even though he was born there, he couldn't wait to get out, I think. LA is so boring. There is a monotony to it."

She says that Burton loves Europe. "I think he's always felt more at home there - well he is now, so he better!" Telling me he "does a very good posh accent now", she thinks her man should make the honours list for employing so many British cast and crew on his films. "Then I could be a Lady," she continues, warming to the idea, "and Billy could be the half-honourable Billy Burton."

Were this ever to happen, it might finally stir some truth in the myth surrounding her family heritage. Despite being the great-granddaughter of former PM Herbert Asquith, and a member of a far-reaching Liberal clan, "I've always been made probably into a bit posher than I **," she says. "That always used to bug my dad - I mean, we didn't have an ounce of blue blood." Landed gentry, they were not. "We don't have country houses. We don't have any family pile; we were poor, relatively." Then there is the fact that her mother, Elena, is actually half-French, half-Spanish. "It wasn't a tremendously British household I was brought up in. That's the irony. I don't even look that British, I don't think. I'm definitely the chip off my mother's block. I don't look like the English side of our family."

If the image of Bonham Carter as the quintessential English rose suddenly seems blighted by green fly, she seems to care as little for this as she does for the family business. "I've never been a particularly political animal - not formally, not party politics. My cousins are - that's just them." Neither is she a feminist, she says. "I mean, not at the moment. You never know but not particularly now" She lets out a self-mocking chuckle. "I tend to rail against any kind of injustice."

The idea of acting, she explains, entered her head at the tender age of five, after she encountered Lisa Harrow, a family friend who trod the boards. "She was so beautiful and glamorous, and all my brothers fell in love with her. So I thought, That would a good thing to do!'" She also cites seeing Judy Davis in My Brilliant Career as a seminal moment. "I wanted to grow up and be her! I was 14, I think. It made a big impression."

As it so often does, luck still played an enormous part. Back in 1985, her picture appeared in a feature in Tatler - a last-minute replacement for her cousin Virginia. Spotted by director Trevor Nunn, she was cast in the title role of a film about Lady Jane Grey in the same year she appeared in A Room With A View. Offers began to pour in, though she also sat an entrance exam for Cambridge. "I did walk around thinking I've got to go to university'. I was very serious, wanting something to fall back on. I was doing the adult thing. Meanwhile, my Dad said, Go to university later. If you have a break, and you can't manufacture this thing, carry on - have a life'. My parents were always very accepting of what I wanted to do."

Following A Room With A View, she became a poster-child for EM Forster adaptations - shooting Howard's End and Where Angels Fear To Tread back-to-back - and developed a penchant for period pieces. Naturally, she dabbled in Shakespeare (as Ophelia in Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet and Olivia in Nunn's Twelfth Night). She tried her hand at Henry James, winning an Oscar nomination for her role as the scheming Kate Croy in The Wings Of A Dove. And not unsurprisingly, she appeared in Frankenstein, the adaptation by her former boyfriend Kenneth Branagh of Mary Shelley's Gothic classic. But contemporary work was hard to come by. She did it with Woody Allen, playing an unfaithful wife in 1995's Mighty Aphrodite, but felt uncomfortable with the experience. "I didn't really have much contact with Allen when we were filming," she sighs.

If one film changed our perception of Bonham Carter, it was 1999's Fight Club, David Fincher's scabrous assault on consumer culture. Cast as Marla Singer, a woman whose heart appeared as black as her eyeliner, it banished her petticoat image in one moment. "You always know what films will last from what you're recognised for," she says. "And it's still being watched endlessly. A while ago, a woman in her 70s or 80s, in Hampstead, was veering towards me - and you normally think, Ah, Merchant Ivory fan'. You have completely different people for different audiences, but she came up to me and said, I just want to tell you, I so love Fight Club!' I thought, Good for you!'"

You might think this would show her about judging people by their appearance - though she claims to be indifferent to the image she projects on screen. "I'm a bit tired of dealing with it. I don't really think too much; I don't want to think about what other people think about me. All the parts I do, I've never thought, I must change my image'. I only do a part if I want to do it, for my own reasons - if I feel excited by it, or inspired by it. I've never done something to try and change people's view of me. That would be a non-starter." It's why she had no qualms about voicing Lady Tottington for the Wallace and Gromit movie The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, one film she has yet to show Billy Ray. She suddenly perks up. "I should show him that," she says. "That's a good point."

It's no surprise that such a non-Hollywood couple as Bonham Carter and Burton don't hang out with actors (with the exception of Depp, Billy's godfather) "so much any more". She doesn't look exactly sad at this idea. "We don't actually have that many film friends. It's quite nice to see other people."

If not exactly on the backburner, her career certainly comes second to the domestic bliss of parenthood of late. "I've been doing a bit of the living bit since I met Tim. I suddenly think, Christ, I've lost out on so much!' There's no regret, but now I can catch up. I'm quite happy not working and doing all the nice bits of life." It sounds like she's hopeful for the future. "Yah, yah," she nods. "At the moment."

Babası Raymond Bonham Carter, İngiliz siyasetinde köklü bir aileden geliyor. Helena Bonham Carter’ın büyük babası Herbert Asquith başbakanlık yapmış. Anne tarafından da diplomat ve bankerler var. Büyük teyzesi ise Baron Rothschild’ın eşi idi. Helena Bonham Carter daha 13 yaşındayken oyuncu olmayı kafasına koymuştu. Bir kompozisyon yarışmasında kazandığı parayı Spotlight oyuncu rehberine adını yazdırmak için kullandı. 16 yaşında da televizyon reklamında oynayarak profesyonel oldu. 1983 yılında da bir televizyon filminde küçük bir rol üstlenebildi. Helena Bonham Carter, o dönemde yeni Laurence Olivier olarak görülen Kenneth Branagh ile özel yaşamındaki beraberliğini beyazperdeye de taşıdı. “Howard’s End”de kız kardeşini canlandırdığı Emma Thompson ile Branagh’ın 1989 yılından beri süren evliliğinin Helena Bonham Carter yüzünden bittiği İngiliz tabloidlerinin gözde konularından biri oldu. Ufacık tefecik bir kadın ama oyun gücü o kadar büyük ki.Kesinlikle aykırı rollerin kadını marla singer'ı hayatım boyunca unutamam.Yeni filmlerini sabırsızlıkla bekliyorum.

The Independent'ın yaptığı habere göre 'Harry Potter ve Zümrüdüanka Yoldaşlığı' filminde Bellatrix Lestrange rolünü başarıyla canlandıran Helena Bonham Carter serinin 6. filmi olan ve 21 Kasım 2008 tarihinde vizyona girecek 'Harry Potter ve Melez Prens' filminde de rol alacak.Ancak Carter'ın hamileliği dolayısıyla çekimlere bahar aylarında katılacağı açıklandı.Haber Warner Bros tarafından henüz doğrulanmadı.

evet aklısın kitapta Bellatrix öyle pek de sevdiğim karakter değildi. Ama filmde Helena öyle bir oynadı ki - o mimikler,tavırlar- hem helena'ya hemde bellatrix en sevdiğim karakter oldu.

Helena Bonham Carter: 'I would have tried anything, even IVF'

Helena Bonham Carter, alternative therapy devotee, tells Andrea Manzi-Davies how she resorted to fertility drugs in her quest to conceive a second child at 41

Pregnancy at 41 certainly agrees with Helena Bonham Carter. Seven months into carrying her second child, vibrant and beaming, she is licking big globules of Marmite – her latest craving – off her fingers.

She knows she is lucky. Not because of her successful acting career maintained over 25 years but because, after trying for two long years, she finally managed to conceive naturally.

Bonham Carter already has one son, Billy Ray, four, with her partner, the cult film director Tim Burton, best known for the Gothic Edward Scissorhands and two of the Batman films.

But she was desperate to have a second child and, while more women are becoming mothers over the age of 40 – there has been a 50 per cent increase in the past 10 years – she was well aware that only 7.8 per cent of women over the age of 42 are able to conceive with their own eggs.

So, like many women in her position, the actress, whose career has moved from playing Merchant Ivory heroines to the evil Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies, was open to considering all options.

And while Bonham Carter is renowned for her interest in alternative therapies, after trying and failing to get pregnant she decided to try conventional fertility medicine. The experience was not a happy one.

She took a fertility drug called Clomid, which stimulates egg production, after being told that she might not have been ovulating. The drug, which was also taken by Jools Oliver, wife of the chef Jamie Oliver, and is prescribed on the NHS, tells the brain that not enough oestrogen is being produced. But Bonham Carter is angry that she was not warned about potential side-effects.

"I had a terrible reaction to it. Many people think it is the only thing that's going to make them ovulate, but as it turned out I was ovulating anyway. It stressed me out beyond belief. Hormonally, I was all over the shop and I got really low emotionally. Lots of people don't have that reaction, but on the internet I found a Clomid Club, with people who react to the stuff discussing it online."

Reassured that she was not the only one to suffer this way, she stopped using it and concentrated on alternative therapies. "I tried acupuncture two years ago," she says. "I went to the Chinese acupuncturist in Belsize Park. Dr Deng, who practices there, is brilliant, and has helped so many local people. She kept saying that I was 'too weak, too weak', and gave me several types of tea to help build my strength up."

She also tried Tui Na (literally "push and grasp"), a form of Chinese massage that follows the same pattern as acupuncture and is an alternative for patients anxious about needles.

But she still wasn't pregnant and the next option was to try IVF. "I think we probably would have, yes," she says now. "Obviously, you don't know what you'd do unless you were actually in that situation. I think we might have gone for a round of IVF, but that would have been that. There was an argument for just having one child, because we thought if that's the way it's meant to be, so be it."

Ironically, however, she finally became pregnant naturally, just when she was under intense pressure at work. Immersed in a demanding role as Mrs Lovett in the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd (with Johnny Depp in the title role and directed by Burton), Bonham Carter was putting in long days with little sleep, singing for hours on end.

"I was working so hard at the time," she recalls. "The first three months being pregnant while filming, I felt totally spaced out. You do need to multi-task with acting. You've got to remember your marks, your lines, singing, everything, and actually – you have no brain! Suddenly your own brain is growing another person's brain, so yours goes defunct. It wasn't ideal, but then I was so happy to be pregnant."

At that time, she also returned to Listening Therapy, where patients listen to Mozart and Gregorian chants to help them unwind. The theory is that by exposing the muscles of the middle ear to different frequencies, concentration improves and stress decreases.

The therapy, based on the work of the French neurologist Alfred Tomatis, has been used to help children with learning difficulties but it is also offered to pregnant women to help them relax before giving birth.

Years ago, Bonham Carter used the therapy to learn a language for an acting role, and revisited it when she was expecting Billy Ray.

During pregnancy, the technique is supposed to produce an alert, relaxed, and physically toned baby, and an easy delivery because it calms the mother. "That was absolutely the case for me with Billy," she says. "Billy was able to hold his head up at a very early stage, he was very laid-back, and although I love chubby babies, Billy has always been physically toned. I really think listening therapy might have helped a lot. The birth wasn't drama-free, but I felt very relaxed."

Despite their reputation for unconventionality – they live in separate houses connected by a hallway – both she and Burton attended antenatal classes before Billy was born. A fan of homoeopathy, she would have preferred a natural birth but "when it came to it, I just went for an epidural", she says. "Although arnica and camomile were really helpful afterwards, what I'd like to know is if there is anything for new fathers." In fact there is; homoeopaths recommend Arg Nit (silver nitrate) or aconite, which can be used for shock and panic, as well as vitamin-B complex and Rescue Remedy.

This time Bonham Carter is, she says, more relaxed about her pregnancy although she has had to give up some treats. "One of my favourite dishes is carpaccio and I love sushi but I've avoided them during this pregnancy," she says. "Obviously anything with raw eggs is forbidden, too. I don't drink caffeine as much as I would normally and try to restrict myself to one cup of coffee a day."

Instead she has become a glutton for peppermint tea and is also snacking on goji berries, hailed as the latest superfood – they are said to have more betacarotene than carrots, more vitamin C than oranges and more iron than steak. As we speak, she wolfs down slices of soda bread with a generous layer of butter and large dollops of Marmite (enriched with Guinness).

She will be giving birth in a hospital again – although she does not reveal which hospital nor will she give details of her birth plan. Is it safe to assume that the hospital will run the show? Or will Burton revert to type and suggest a Gothic birth? There are gales of unrestrained laughter. "Oh no! The hospital I hope…"

Listening Therapy
Listening therapy was developed by Alfred Tomatis, a French neurologist who now has 200 centres around the world. Patients are "taught" by listening to a series of music tapes over six months. This is said to re-educate the middle-ear muscles and aid concentration. It is used to help children with problems such as attention deficit disorder and autism, and is also offered to pregnant women to make them feel more relaxed. www.tuneyourears.com

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment, based on the premise that illness is due to an imbalance of "vital energy" (qi) said to flow through the body along 12 "meridians". Needles are stuck into these meridians to restore the energy. With lower back pain some studies have shown acupuncture achieves better results than conventional treatment, and it is also used for fertility problems, stress, addiction and pain relief. The British Acupuncture Council regulates acupuncturists.

Traditional Chinese medicine
TCM is a range of medical practices developed in China over several thousand years. Treatment is usually a combination of herbal remedies — either taken in tablet form or as a "tea" of barks, roots and herbs — acupuncture and Tui Na massage. There has been concern about unregistered and poorly trained practitioners working in the UK; registered TCM doctors can be found through the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
