Will Dillinger walk Aurora's streets again? Or - more likely - Christian Bale and Johnny Depp?

It's long been rumored that infamous gangster John Dillinger used Aurora as a place to hide from federal agents.

In 1984, an author even suggested that Dillinger was in Aurora while his look-alike took a fatal bullet outside Chicago's Biograph theater.

If there's any truth to that, then maybe the real Dillinger will wander back to Aurora soon. Sure, he'd be 104, but even an elderly ex-gangster would want to meet Johnny Depp. Especially since Depp could be acting out his death on the streets of Aurora.

Earlier this week, Academy Award-nominated director Michael Mann and several associates spent a few hours at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Aurora, scouting it as a possible location for Mann's next movie, Public Enemies.

The movie would star Depp as Dillinger, the gangster who -- according to all reasonable accounts -- was shot outside the north side Biograph Theater on July 22, 1934. According to Variety , Christian Bale may sign on to play Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who tracked Dillinger to the theater.

Variety's report says the movie is based on the 2004 book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43. The book details the government's attempts to capture criminal legends like Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson.

Paramount Executive Director Diana Martinez downplayed the possibility of the Paramount standing in for Chicago's Biograph. The Paramount is one of many theaters Mann is checking out, she cautioned.

"It's a maybe," she said. "They came and checked it out. He liked it a lot and spent a lot of time here."

But even Martinez got excited about the possibility of big stars wandering through the historic theater again.

"It was kind of exciting they spent so much time here," she said. "Who knows what could happen?"

Mayor Tom Weisner echoed her excitement, saying that he is glad to see the painstakingly preserved theater appreciated by Hollywood. The Paramount would be historically accurate to the time of the film -- it opened in September 1931.

"This would be really cool," the mayor said. "My only concern would be keeping my wife 400 feet from Johnny Depp."

If Mann needs another authentic reason to choose the Fox Valley for filming, perhaps he can stop by the grave of John "Three Fingered Jack" Hamilton, one of Dillinger's associates. (According to Internet reports -- which may not be entirely accurate -- Australian actor Jason Clarke is scheduled to play Hamilton in Public Enemies.)

Hamilton is buried in an unmarked grave in Oswego. Legend has it that Hamilton and Dillinger were hiding in Minnesota when police found them. A shoot-out ensued, in which Hamilton was injured.

Hamilton and Dillinger fled to Chicago, then Aurora, where Hamilton died. His body was covered in lye and buried in an Oswego field -- or so the story goes. But for years, even after Hamilton's body was dug up in 1935, rumors persisted that Hamilton and Dillinger were still alive.

The stories are testament to how these criminals became folk heroes by attacking banks, which many ordinary people weren't fond of during the Depression.

Still, if Mann does choose Aurora, and you see any suspicious-looking 104-year-olds standing in the shadows critiquing the performances, please call your local FBI office.

Depp movie to be filmed in Northwoods

“Public Enemies,” the John Dillinger film directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp, is a go. It will start filming in Wisconsin in April.

Ruth Gardner owns and runs Voss's Birchwood Lodge in Manitowish Waters with her son, Chris, and his wife, Vanessa. Ruth's mother, Audrey, was a sister to Nan, the wife of Emil Wanatka. Emil Wanatka owned Little Bohemia Lodge at the time of the Dillinger episode.

“I just know they are scheduled to begin shooting in April,” said Gardner. “One of the people with the film company, the set designer, called me. They're supposed to come up and go through our cabins to select furniture and other stuff. They want to re-create what Little Bohemia looked like, especially upstairs. I'm probably one of the last people around that knows what it looked like.”

Most people know the story. For about a year, from May of 1933 to the spring of 1934, John Dillinger and his gang robbed several banks without being caught. They also stole machine guns, rifles, revolvers, ammunition and bullet proof vests from two police armories in Auburn and Peru, Ind. Gang members shot and killed police officers in Chicago and East Chicago, Indiana. Dillinger was famous and the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover was watching.

Awaiting trial in Crown Point, Ind., for the killing of the East Chicago policeman, Dillinger escaped in the sheriff's car and drove to Illinois. Taking the sheriff's car across state lines proved to be his undoing. It was his first federal offense and put the FBI on the case. Hoover went after Dillinger.

In March of 1934, Dillinger and his gang got into a shoot-out at the Lincoln Court Apartments in St. Paul, Minnesota. On April 3, 1934, Dillinger and Homer Van Meter robbed a police station in Warsaw, Indiana, taking guns and bulletproof vests. It was on to Northern Wisconsin.

According to the book Tales of the Northwoods by Mark Miazga, “Shortly after Dillinger's arrival at the Little Bohemia resort in Manitowish Waters north of Rhinelander, the FBI received a tip that John Dillinger and his gang were staying there. The tip came from a phone booth in Rhinelander. Mrs. Nan Wanatka, wife of Little Bohemia's owner and proprietor, Emil Wanatka, had become nervous during the Dillinger gang's stay at Little Bohemia. She told her brother-in-law Henry Voss of her concern.”

Voss made the trip to Rhinelander to call the FBI in Chicago. Agent Melvin Purvis talked to Voss. April 22 saw four airplanes full of agents leave St. Paul and Chicago for Rhinelander. Miazga's book goes on, “Rhinelander became the focal point for the FBI as they quickly gathered automobiles, armaments and the assistance of local law enforcement officers. Local automobile owners rented automobiles to FBI agents for a surprise raid on Dillinger and his gang in Manitowish Waters.”

Though nobody said the quarry was John Dillinger, locals made the connection. Five cars left for Little Bohemia. The FBI, Justice Department agents and Melvin Purvis, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Chicago office joined forces for a surprise raid on Little Bohemia. In his book Miazga says, “In the dark, agents accidentally fired on three innocent visitors to the resort, killing Eugene Boisneau, a visitor to the lodge who worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Alerted by gunfire, Dillinger and his gang slipped out of a second story window and shot their way out of the trap.”

After the shoot-out at, Dillinger and his gang escaped in three automobiles from the waterside of Little Bohemia. Baby Face Nelson, who had been with them, went his own way.”

One of the cars rented by FBI agents belonged to Rhinelander resident Isidore “Izzy” Tuchalski.

FBI agent Melvin Purvis drove the Ford coupe to Koerner's Resort cornering Baby Face Nelson. Nelson opened up with a machine gun, killing one, while wounding two others. Injured, Nelson managed to steal the Tuchalski car, finally abandoning it on the road to Boulder Junction. It was riddled with bulletholes.

Gardner related a number of stories about Little Bohemia and the characters involved.

“My Mom lived with Emil and Nan Wanatka,” said Gardner. “By the time I knew them, they were divorced. Emil's favorite line was ‘God Bless America.' He had all sorts of jobs. He was a bantamweight prize fighter and a butcher.

“My Uncle Louie ran two stills in the Northwoods, made bootleg for Racine and part of Chicago. My Aunt Nan would deliver booze to Racine with the stuff under the floorboards.

“Emil wanted Dillinger and his gang to leave just before the shoot-out. My Aunt Nan had slipped a note into my grandmother's cigarette pack telling them who the visitors were. They went to Rhinelander and called the FBI. Emil and Nan were hiding in the walk-in freezer when the shootout was going on.”

Gardner said she is willing to trade the use of her furniture for a photo with Johnny Depp. As for as the Film “Public Enemies,” Gardner is expecting a call in March to set up a time to go through the furniture in her cabins.

There was always a rumor of a stash of money left by Dillinger at Little Bohemia. Gardner would only say, “Nobody ever found the money, but Emil lived awfully well for a resort owner.”

Look for Johnny Depp in the Northwoods late this spring.

Verdict not in on Depp movie

Day of filming might occur at courthouse in Lafayette County

DARLINGTON, Wis. -- Actor Johnny Depp could be sitting in the Lafayette County Courthouse sometime this spring.

Early last month, Lafayette County Clerk Linda Bawden learned that producers of the upcoming film "Public Enemies" were considering using the courtroom for a day of shooting. "Public Enemies" features Depp as gangster John Dillinger.

Directed by Michael Mann, four-time Academy Award nominee, the film is about federal agents who try to take down notorious gangsters like Dillinger, Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis and Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd during the booming crime wave in the 1930s.

According to Bawden, members of the film's crew, including Mann, initially toured the courthouse on Jan. 6. They took pictures and tested lighting. The courtroom attracted the most attention, she added. On Jan. 24, several members of the film's art department returned, making more measurements and taking photos of various courthouse areas. The crew was there for about an hour and a half.

"I was told that was a good sign," Bawden said. She said crews are planning a
one-day shoot, most likely in April or May. They would be in town two days prior to shooting and a day after to wrap up production.

"We are very excited," Bawden said. "Finally, something positive and great for Lafayette County."

Bawden said she was told that filming would take place at the courthouse, although nothing has been received in writing. Tony Hozeny, a state Department of Commerce spokesman in Madison, emphasized that nothing has been confirmed to date.

"We've had discussions, and we would be delighted to have them film here," Hozeny said. "But there is no confirmation of this."

Hozeny said the state offers a film production services tax credit program. It offers assistance to film makers to help offset their costs incurred while making accredited productions in the state.

Built between 1905 and 1907, the Lafayette County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features marble walls, tile floors and a Tiffany glass rotunda. It is decorated with murals and statuary throughout. Bawden calls it an "original, a beautiful courthouse."

Lafayette County isn't the only Wisconsin site that could be tapped for a film scene. Richland Center's M&I Bank is reportedly a site, but nothing there is confirmed either, according to Hozeny.

It might not be surprising that Mann has an interest in filming in Wisconsin. A Chicago native, Mann studied English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was an active member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. He earned Academy Award nominations for best director and best motion picture in 2000 for "The Insider."

The movie, scheduled for a 2009 release, is a screen adaptation of Bryan Burrough's 2004 book, "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34."

Thousands try out for Michael Mann gangster epic starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale

The queue was indeed quite long when the day started, with hundreds of hopefuls arriving early and ringing the hall for their shot in front of the cameras in Public Enemies.

Count me as one of those persons. A fan of Mann’s films, I have followed and written about this new film since learning about it late last year. Like others, I have wondered if what that looks to be an epic production would be casting extras, particularly for scenes planned to be Wisconsin. It would be the state's first big coup since its new film production incentives program went into effect on the first of the year. Those questions were answered last week, when Joan Philo Casting of Chicago announced that it would hold an open call for extras in Madison on February 16. And so like many others, I made my way to Monona Terrace to give it a shot.

Actually, my experience last Saturday started at the Walgreens on the Capitol Square, where I encountered another hopeful picking up photos for submitting as part of the casting process. “Getting any experience we can is pretty important,” said Lorah Haskins, a theater and communication arts major at UW-Madison who was attending the casting call with several fellow students. This wasn’t their only motivation, though. “We heard that Johnny Depp is in it, and we would love to be an extra in one of his movies,” she noted.

As requested in the announcement for the call, Haskins was dressed in a simulacrum of 1930s fashion in a dress and overcoat, along with medium-heeled shoes and brushed-out curls in her hair. “I think there are going to be a lot of people there,” she speculated about the casting call, “so we would be lucky to get cast.”

She was right on the turnout. The Exhibition Hall at Monona Terrace, which was two nights hence to host a pre-primary rally for Hillary Clinton, was partitioned into two sections for the casting call. One basically served as a holding area for the line of candidates, while the other was used for a pair of brief photography set-ups that were at the heart of the process. Upon arriving at the call, the first thing one did was to fill out a card with a gamut of personal details -- contact info, clothing sizes, acting experience, and so on -- before or while getting in line. This queue was indeed quite long when the day started, with hundreds of hopefuls arriving early and ringing the hall for their shot in front of the cameras.

In an online announcement about the extras casting calls for Public Enemies, Philo emphasizes that the experience of an extra in a holding area or on set can be “mind-numbingly boring,” and that patience is an essential virtue. She also suggests talking to others waiting with you.

“I said hello to the person on my right, and I said hello to the person on my left,” notes Philo about one of her experiences as an extra. “And then I laughed my head off for two straight days -- see, life is what you make it. Make a friend, or be miserable. Your choice. But sometimes, you’re constantly on set with very little time in the holding area. You never know!”

Realizing this advice was already useful while waiting in line at Saturday’s casting call, I started talking with the other hopefuls immediately around me. As it turns out, I was surrounded by actual actors.

Standing in line just in front of me was Natalie Mandrick, an actor from California who recently moved from L.A. to Milwaukee. Her work includes roles in the 2006 film Flicka and the 2004 film Mushka Water, as well as parts in various other independent and student films, TV shows, and commercials. Hoping to continue acting in the Midwest, she is looking forward to learning what opportunities the new Wisconsin film incentives would bring to film industry folks living in the region.

“It’s simply a great opportunity,” said Mandrick of the casting call, and like all of us in the room, was excited that Public Enemies will be shooting in Wisconsin.

Standing in line just behind me was a pair of brothers from Appleton. Both Jon Parker and Greg Parker learned about this casting call from Hunter Adams, the director of the independent film The Hungry Bull. The movie -- there’s a trailer here -- is the latest work from the Neenah-based Burgoo Films and wrapped production last year. “Adams emailed me and said this would be perfect,” said Jon Parker. “Greg has a starring role in the film, and I have a non speaking bit part, and trying more acting is just something that we both became interested in after we did this film. This is the perfect opportunity to come down to Madison.”

Both brothers sported beards, but said they would certainly shave them per the casting call guidelines if they were hired as extras. “This is pretty cool,” noted Parker. “There are so many people from different walks of life, sizes, and ages. It’s pretty incredible.”

Like others waiting we discussed the scene at the call, what we might expect with the casting process in the next room over, and what being an extra entails. During this time, the line moved forward in several large bursts, as groups with several scores of people were brought into the adjoining portion of the Exhibition Hall for the actual casting process. It also turned out that the wait wasn’t too long, with only about an hour passing before we made it to the front of the line, and more importantly, in the front of the next group to be ushered into the casting call.

The primary portion of the call was very brief, starting with a brief speech from Philo about the basics of the process, the physical requirements for extras in this film, and her expectations of those persons actually hired. Most of it covered ground detailed in her casting call guidelines, but she emphasized the need for this film’s extras to really look as if they were from the early 1930s, specifically no close-cropped hair, no facial hair, and especially no tanning salons. This is doubly the case given the fact that Mann is helming the production, the director well-known for his fastidious approach to filmmaking.

From there, everybody separated into three more lines, each ending with a table and camera where the movie hopeful handed over their casting card, received an ID number (like a mugshot!), and stood against a white background for a close-up photograph. From there, everybody was directed to turn in their numbers and exit via a single door. What this actually served to do, though, was filter each aspirant through another casting process, in which some were tapped to stand for another photograph, this one capturing one’s entire body. Those tapped included a higher proportion of children and senior citizens, though this was largely due to their lesser numbers as a whole amongst everybody turning out for the call.

“The line moved quickly enough and everyone was very friendly,” said Ryan Wisniewski of Madison, who attended the casting call with his wife and sister-in-law, and noted the size and efficiency of the staff running the show. “We chatted the entire time with those in line around us, and everyone was equally excited,” he continued. “We only had to wait about an hour, and the heartbeat just kept speeding up until that photo was taken. Immediately afterward, there was that infamous second photo.”

Wisniewski shot his own photos of the call for posterity, as did Angela Richardson (here) and Kandy Watson (here). “Everyone filled out a simple questionnaire with their photo attached, we received a short speech on the inner workings of the movie industry, then they snapped another photo or two of you holding a number for their records,” noted Watson. “And that was that!”

Other hopefuls had similar comments about the process, including an aspiring actress at her first of two auditions that day, and a photographer who brought his 13-year-old son to try out on Saturday.

With their time at the call complete, most people headed back up the escalators and left Monona Terrace, which was at that point being prepared for the Hillary Clinton rally that was at that point scheduled for Sunday, before poor weather pushed it back to Monday. A few people were hanging around, though, watching the goings-on at the call from windows overlooking the Exhibition Hall. I spoke with a couple who had already gone through the process.

“I wanted to be an extra in this movie as soon as I heard about it,” said Lori Bass-Edgar. “How often does something like this happen in Wisconsin?” Also watching the call was Duncan Anderson of Middleton, whose 19-year-old step son was going through the process downstairs. “I’m excited for him,” Anderson said, “and ** hoping that he’ll get picked.”

Persons who do get cast as extras for Public Enemies may not learn about it for some time still, though. Philo informed each group of people at the call that those selected would get a phone call informing them of their status some days before the scheduled shoot, and would be asked to make a commitment if hired. Given that the production schedule is set to run from March through June, though, and with only a portion of this time to be spent in Wisconsin, this will likely be only the next in a series of long waits for extras.

Meanwhile, the casting process continues. On Monday, Philo issued an announcement seeking knowledgeable photographers from Madison who would be able to convincingly handle a period camera as an extra in the film. As detailed in this casting call:


In order to recreate the look, the feel, the accuracy of the time, we want to gets a hands up finding men (20s to 60s) that know how to operate older cameras or today’s cameras that require a photographer’s ability to operate. I’m not talking the “point and shoot digital cameras” I’m talking camera lens, focusing, all knowledge and ability of a camera-person in the know. These are non-speaking roles needing the special abilities of real photographers. We won't be having you actually taking the pictures. You will be cast as a photographer.
Those getting these extras parts might have the best shot of anybody to be in the thick of the action and close to the starring cast, if one can imagine those kinds of iconic film scenes in which a scrum of photographers snaps pics of a central character, and in this case, possibly public enemy number one.

Philo has also announced that other casting calls may be held in Chicago and in Wisconsin. These may come quickly, though, as the gears of production for Public Enemies are rapidly starting to roll. A pair of script reviews have been published online -- by Latino Review last month and CHUD yesterday -- with each glowing about the film’s storyline and Mann’s involvement. Vanity Fair contributing editor Bryan Burrough, who authored the book Public Enemies on which the film is based, has also commented on the movie. Noting his peripheral role in the production, Burrough focused on the high level of interest among Wisconsinites and in the state’s media -- Hi Bryan! -- and his hope for a cameo.

And though the State of Wisconsin has yet to publicly announce any deal with the film’s backing studio or location specifics, Universal, about the particulars of a tax incentives deal for the production, the process is clearly moving forward. Business owners in Richland Center and Manitowish Waters have announced that shoots are scheduled in those towns, and last Saturday’s casting call for extras follows others around the state that were held for vintage autos. It won’t be long before more details get released.

“All-in-all, it was a really cool and rare experience for a Madisonian, being a part, albeit a very small one, of a major Hollywood production,” concluded Wisniewski. “If we’re not chosen, oh well. At least we can say we tried. Either way, it’ll be a blast looking for familiar faces and locations while watching what is sure to be an awesome film.”

Hello to all my fans in La La Land. It’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Fidel from Florida here. I’m back to yap at ya about something set to grab the silver screen and shake it down.



Public Enemies was written by Ronan Bennett with revisions by Michael Mann (Heat, Miami Vice) and Ann Biderman (Smilla’s Sense of Snow). The draft was dated November 2007. Needless to say, things can change since the strike is over, but Universal greenlit the movie based on this draft.



Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Carribean) is set to star as John Dillinger and, on the opposite side of the coin, Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, 3:10 to Yuma) as Melvin Purvis. Fresh off the Oscar win, Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose) is going to raise her status instantly in her turn as Dillinger’s squeeze Billie Frechette. Channing Tatum (Step Up, GI Joe), Giovanni Ribisi (My Name is Earl, Friends) and Stephen Dorff (Blade, S.F.W.) are set to round out the cast and some of Dillinger’s criminal cohorts.



THE STORY


Public Enemies focuses on John Dillinger from around the time he meets Billie Frechette to his death at the hands of law enforcement. This is also the story of the lawman, Melvin Purvis, set to task by J. Edger Hoover to bring him in.


THE SKINNY


John Dillinger is a gentleman’s bandit. While he’ll rob from a bank, he won’t take the customers’ cash as well. He’s a charmer and quick to sweep coat check girl Billie Frechette off her feet. He’s also a loyal friend and we first see him starting a jail break to bust pals out of the clink. These qualities elevate him to the status of a cult hero which makes Hoover all the more keen on catching him.



Melvin Purvis is a square-jawed lawman who finds himself in the deep end. After nailing Pretty Boy Floyd, he gets assigned to bring down Dillinger for Hoover and the Feds. Dillinger’s craftiness leads to some slip ups which wear down on Purvis. He isn’t out to make a name for himself, but learns early on his role to make a name for Hoover. Ultimately, Purvis sees Hoover for the bag of hot air that he is.



These two men are set on a collision course with bodies left in the wake.



The writing is terse and to the point, but easily conveys the tone and the world of crime-riddled 1930s Chicago. With a couple of robberies, the constant chase and some well-known criminals thrown in, the pace and excitement never slow. I think the weight of the love story will fall on Depp and Cotillard, but they’re up to the challenge. I’m really looking forward to Depp playing more of a standard leading man role after some fantastic, but fantastical, roles.



The thought of Depp vs. Bale has my knees weak in a totally hetero way. Those of you who caught Bale in 3:10 to Yuma know what he can do with a somewhat reticent lawman role.


THE FINAL WORD


This cast and story spell good things for Michael Mann. Mann just so happens to know his way around a crime flick and Public Enemies is a love letter to the gangster films of old. The Untouchables comes to mind as its more recent movie kin.

Marion Cotillard gave me a hug on Oscars night... what a babe!

She goes into rehearsals in a few days for Michael Mann's movie Public Enemies, about heart-throb Thirties gangster John Dillinger.

She'll be portraying Dillinger's flame Billie Frechette. "She was a torch singer and I will be singing again, but not so much as I did in La Vie En Rose," Marion told me.

"I play Johnny Depp's girlfriend!" she added, her eyes lighting up.

It's a major part, but not a huge role, she explained. "It's for the opportunity to play an American. Well, her father was French and her mother was a native American and she was raised on the reservation in Wisconsin. It's perfect for me."

I thought she was one of the bestdressed women at the Oscars in her Chopard gems and that sculptured Jean Paul Gaultier gown.

Northwest Indiana's Lake County Jail preps for Johnny Depp visit

CROWN POINT, Ind. - Johnny Depp will be in town this spring to recreate gangster John Dillinger's infamous 1934 escape from Lake County Jail for his upcoming film "Public Enemies."

Depp will play Dillinger, and the scene will be shot at the Old Sheriff's House and Jail. No specific dates have been released, but filming will take place from March through June in Chicago, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Dillinger, an Indiana native, escaped the heavily guarded northwestern Indiana jail March 3, 1934, while he awaited trial on charges that he killed Officer William Patrick O'Malley during an East Chicago bank robbery.


He then drove away in Sheriff Lillian Holley's new Ford. A few months later, federal agents fatally shot him outside a Chicago theater.

Work crews started preparing the red-brick jail for its movie close-up last Monday.

"I wish we could say (the restoration) will be complete, but it'll be mostly the entry and upstairs," location scout George Constas said.

The jail's neighbor, the Hall of Justice Bar and Ballroom, will host up to 200 actors, crew members and technicians.

"Hollywood's coming to Crown Point," co-owner Philip Struebig said. "It's going to be a heck of a thing for Crown Point. It will put us back on the map."

Depp is probably best known for starring roles in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, "Finding Neverland" and "Edward Scissorhands."

His co-star in "Public Enemies" will be this year's Oscar-winner for best actress, Marion Cotillard, who is playing Dillinger's moll.

THE DEPP MAN: SEXY ACTOR Johnny Depp, who is in town to film director Michael Mann's movie "Public Enemies," in which he plays the infamous gangsta' John Dillinger, has been busy getting to know the happening spots in our great town and where to find great Italian food. Depp, who has always made the ladies swoon and was Oscar-nominated for his starring role in "Sweeney Todd," dined at the tasty LaScarola on Grand Saturday with Mann. (Actual filming might start around March 17.)

Depp and Mann, who is a masterful director and known for such films as "Miami Vice," "Ali," "Collateral," and "Heat," were in with a few other actors and dined hearty on pasta, veal chops and steak. I understand from one of the customers, who enjoyed just looking at the gorgeous Depp, that he was very congenial ... but folks were respectful and didn't bother him for autographs. How nice.

Also, around midnight Friday, Depp, wearing his trademark hat, enjoyed hearing Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Kurt Elling at the Green Mill. And once again, patrons allowed Depp to just enjoy the ambience and the music.

Depp's team looking over Gary locales

Gary may get in on the filming for "Public Enemies," which will star Johnny Depp as John Dillinger.

A locations official for the movie recently contacted Ben Clement, who handles film office matters for the city.

"They're just doing an initial site search to see if there are any locations within the city that might be suitable for filming," said Clement, economic development and marketing administrator for the Gary, East Chicago, Hammond Empowerment Zone.

Clement confirmed that representatives of the Universal Pictures release have been in Gary to scout potential shooting sites.

"Nothing's been firmed up at all yet," Clement said Wednesday. He declined to divulge any Gary locations that are being considered.

Clement did say, though, that Gary was open to the idea of accommodating film crews for the drama about a Depression-era crime wave.

"The city of Gary is interested in any film project that might help us to attract more film projects and to help advance the city," Clement said. "So naturally, something of this magnitude would be beneficial for us."

Shooting on "Public Enemies" is scheduled to take place over the next several months in Chicago and surrounding areas, including Crown Point. Set for a 2009 release, "Public Enemies" is based on the acclaimed Bryan Burrough book of the same name.

Depp fans start trek to Columbus for March 17 film start

COLUMBUS - Along with construction on the set of the movie "Public Enemies," false sightings of the movie's star, Johnny Depp, have begun, and fans are starting to visit Columbus in hopes of a chance of seeing the Oscar-nominated actor.

"Someone told me that they saw Johnny Depp near Westgate theater in Madison this week," said West James Gallery owner Kim Bates. "Last week someone thought they saw him in town here."

"Public Enemies" is a Michael Mann-directed film about the life of notorious bank robber John Dillinger. It will star Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard.

Robin Salzwedel, owner of Secret Garden Floral at 115 N. Ludington St., heard similar rumors of the stars popping up around the city.

"There has been a lot of curious people," Salzwedel said. "It's brought a lot of people in the shop. A lot of people want to know what we heard. Someone already told me that there was a sighting of Johnny Depp in town. We just laughed."

Appleton residents Tanya Vegetabile and Rebecca Schinke visited Columbus on Wednesday to scout the location.

"We're checking it out so we will know our way around when the movie is being filmed," Schinke said.

The two spent their time filming the crews working on the buildings.

Bates said she is glad about the attention that Columbus is getting from the filming of the movie, set to begin March 17.

"Hopefully, people will see how wonderful Columbus is and come back," Bates said. "I think it is great that they are using Columbus for the movie."

Many downtown buildings are receiving new awnings and window panels that will take them back in time to the 1930s, along with temporary interior set pieces that will cover the insides of the buildings during filming.

Sharrow's Pharmacy, which has been in business since 1889, will remain a pharmacy on the James Street side of the building and a clothing store on the Ludington Street side of the building. "It was going to be a bakery, but they decided to make it a drugstore," co-owner Nick Sharrow said.

Sharrow's will start to undergo its transformation today. Sharrow said that they will move some merchandise into the basement and move some of the over-the-counter merchandise so crews will have room to put up the false wall.

Salzwedel's sign has already been removed and a former inhabitant, "Nitche Market," is now seen in the front of the building. Salzwedel said the building was a tavern when it was built in the 1800s and was a meat market in the late 1920s.

"We've joked that we should start asking people if they want meat or flowers," she said.

Bates's gallery used to be First National Bank, built in 1916. The building will be called Green Castle Bank in the movie.

"My father told me that Dillinger used to hang out in Green Castle, Ind.," Bates said.

In the movie, Depp will be running out of Bates's store in a bank-robbing scene.

"I guess they picked us because we're centrally located," Bates said. "And the facade of the building was from a bank in the era that they needed one from."

Bates said she realizes there will be a lot more people in the city when the movie is to be filmed, but she thinks the city will be able to handle the extra guests. After all, Columbus does fill up with visitors every July 4 for the city's Independence Day celebration.

"Of course, we're not bringing porta-potties in for the people coming in for this," Bates said. "But I think we can handle everyone for one day."

Columbus resident Marsha Sparks agreed that the publicity is a good thing for the city.

"Who knew they would find Columbus from all the towns in Wisconsin?" she said. "The only think I hope is he puts a little Johnny Depp in Dillinger."

Movie star Johnny Depp told John Dillinger's nephew, Jeff Scalf of Mooresville, that he would try to be sensitive to the bank robber's true persona. And that he would portray Dillinger as he really was.

Depp and Hollywood producer Michael Mann paid a quiet visit to Mooresville on Friday to do some filming on the inside and outside of the farm house where Dillinger lived on Old 267. They also wanted to get a feel for his home town. Scalf said they spent about four hours here and traveled in two black SUVs, filming from the inside of the vehicles.

Accompanying Scalf and the film duo was an attorney for Dillinger's family, Amy Wright of the Sommer Barnard law firm in Indianapolis. Wright said she was there simply to look after everyone's interests during the Mooresville visit and to take some pictures.

Depp will star as the famous outlaw in Mann's "Public Enemies," the working title of the movie based on Bryan Burrough's book. Two other characters have been chosen - Christian Bales has signed on to play FBI agent Melvin Purvis, and Marion Cotillard is set to portray Dillinger's girlfriend, Billie Frechette. Cotillard won an Academy Award this year as Best Actress in her role in the movie, "La Vie En Rose."

"As my grandmother used to say, 'Don't romanticize John, but don't villanize him, either.' He was who he was. John was different than some of the other criminals of his era," Scalf said. "He wasn't mean-spirited or the first to pull out a gun. I hope this movie will show all sides of John."

Scalf said both Mann and Depp were quite knowledgeable about Dillinger's history and surrounding events. They went into John's former bedroom, studied family relics, letters, a reproduction of the outlaw's wooden gun. They also looked at pictures the public had never seen before.

"Johnny actually held the wooden gun. They've really done their homework," Scalf said. "They were both very down-to-earth, polite and respectful of the subject matter."

Scalf said they had even visited Washington, D.C. to study FBI files.

"Michael Mann is known for his attention to detail and authentic elements," Scalf said. "He really does his research and homework to make the scenes accurate - down to the furniture, vehicles and clothing."

Mann produced "Ali," starring Will Smith and is also known for the Miami Vice series and movie, according to Scalf.

Mann's production company, Forward Pass, Inc., is teaming up with Universal Studios and Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Productions.

Filming is set to begin this spring, but Scalf said Mann and Depp did not talk about whether they would return to Mooresville for the movie. He said he had understood from other articles on the movie that much of the shooting would be done in Chicago and some in Crown Point.

Peki John Dillinger , kimdir?

1930'lu yıllarda Amerika'nın Ortabatı Bölgesi'ni kasıp kavurmuş, 1903-1934 yılları arasında yaşamış banka soyguncusu. Cana yakınlığı, şiddetten kaçınması ve o sıralarda halkın pek çoğunun ekonomik zorlukların sorumlusu olarak gördüğü bankaları hedef alması nedeniyle bir kanun kaçağı olmasına rağmen bazı çevrelerde bir halk kahramanı olarak anılmıştır. Birkaç kez yakalnmış ancak tutuklu bulunduğu yerlerden her seferinde kolaylıkla kaçarak yerel polis örgütlerini zor durumda bırakmıştır. Bir seferinde tutuklu bulunduğu İndiana'nın Crown Point (Taç Noktası) Kasabası'ndaki tutukevinden siyaha boyalı bir tahta parçasını silah gibi göstererek kaçması üzerine çevre şehirlerde bu kasabanın adının Clown Point'e (Palyaço Noktası) çevrilmesine yol açmıştır.

Hakkındaki bir diğer rivayete göre ise, tutuklu bulunduğu hapishanenin müdürünü rehin aldıktan sonra hapishanenin arabası ve şoförü ile kaçarken çevredeki bir bankaya girip soymuş ve bankadan aldığı paranın bir kısmını hapishane müdürü ve şoförüne pay olarak vermiştir. Yerel polis örgütlerinin Dillinger'ı yakalamadaki başarısızlığı üzerine FBI, Dillinger'ı yakalama işini kendi üzerine aldı. FBI'ın efsanevi başkanı J. Edgar Hoover, Dillinger'ın yakalanması durumunda halkın, o sıralarda yeni kurulmuş olan FBI'a desteğinin artacağını düşünerek bu konuyu çok önemsiyordu. John Dillinger, Chicago Kenti'nde, ilişki içinde bulunduğu Polly Hamilton'ın yanında saklanmaktayken, Hamilton'ın arkadaşı Ana Cumpanas'ın Amerika'da oturma izni karşılığında FBI'a ihbarda bulunması sonucu bir sinema çıkışı pusuya düşürülüp öldürüldü. FBI'ın atış poligonlarındaki hedeflerin üzerinde hala daha John Dillinger'ın resminin bulunduğu söylenir.
