Konusu:

SYNOPSIS
From writer/directors Larry and Andy Wachowski, the creators of the groundbreaking “The Matrix” trilogy, and producer Joel Silver comes the live-action, high-octane family adventure “Speed Racer.”
Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer—whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.
Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed’s thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won’t drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line.
The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother’s life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.
Slated for release on May 9, 2008, “Speed Racer” marks the Wachowski brothers’ first writing/directing collaboration since “The Matrix” movies. Joel Silver, who previously worked with the Wachowskis on “The Matrix” movies and “V For Vendetta,” is producing the film under his Silver Pictures banner.
The film stars Emile Hirsch (“Alpha Dog”) as Speed, Christina Ricci (“Black Snake Moan”) as Trixie, Matthew Fox (TV’s “Lost”) as Racer X, and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and John Goodman (“Evan Almighty”) as Mom and Pops Racer. Rounding out the main cast are Australian actor Kick Gurry (“Spartan”) as Sparky; Paulie Litt (TV’s “Hope & Faith”) as Spritle; Roger Allam (“The Queen,” “V For Vendetta”) as Royalton; and Asian music star Ji Hoon Jung (popularly known as Rain), making his major feature film debut as a rival driver.
Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, the live-action “Speed Racer” will showcase the kind of revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers’ films.
“Speed Racer” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, of a Silver Pictures Production.

JOHN GOODMAN remembers the day in 1975 when he left St. Louis for New York, armed only with a degree in fine arts from Southwest Missouri State University, $1,000 his brother had lent him and a dream of being a professional actor. He didn't want to look back 15 years later and say, “I wonder if I could have ...” He made the rounds, worked at odd jobs and just tried to keep busy. He’s been quite busy ever since.
Today Goodman is one of the entertainment industry’s most respected actors. He earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1992 for his chilling performance in the Coen Brothers’ heralded “Barton Fink.” Coincidentally, Goodman's breakthrough motion picture performance was in “Raising Arizona,” also a Coen Brothers film. Goodman was raised in St. Louis by his mother, his father having passed away when John was two years old. As a tall, broad-shouldered teenager, he attended Afton High School, where he dedicated himself to football (his team won one game). He intended to play football at Southwest Missouri State but injured a knee and was forced to sit out a year. He spent that year studying drama with fellow students Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper. He never returned to football and graduated in 1975 with a B.F.A. degree in Theatre.
Goodman’s stage credits include many dinner theatre and children's theatre productions, as well as several off-Broadway plays. His regional theatre credits include “Henry IV, Parts I and II,” “Antony and Cleopatra” and “As You Like It.” He performed in a road production of “The Robber Bridegroom” and starred in two Broadway shows, “Loose Ends” in 1979 and “Big River” in 1985.

CHRISTINA RICCI is one of Hollywood's most respected young actors whose talent and poise is well beyond her years.
In one of her most challenging and exciting roles to date, Ricci most recently starred in "Black Snake Moan," from director Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow"). Produced by John Singleton and Stephanie Allain, the film stars Samuel L. Jackson as a blues guitarist who tries to redeem the soul of a sex-addicted girl (played by Ricci). The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and Paramount Vantage released the film in March 2007.
Following "Black Snake Moan," Ricci will next be seen in "Penelope," co-starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon. The film is a modern-day offbeat fable about a young woman (played by Ricci) who, having spent her life trapped by a family curse, sets out to find love. The film is slated to be released by IFC Films in August 2007.
Ricci will soon begin production on Larry and Andy Wachowski's live-action adaptation of 1960s cartoon "Speed Racer" for Warner Bros. Pictures and Producer Joel Silver. Based on the anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences, Ricci will star as "Trixie," opposite Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman. The film is slated for release Summer 2008.
Ricci was last seen in the critically acclaimed film "Monster" starring opposite Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, and earned an Emmy Award nomination for her guest role on the ABC hit show, "Grey's Anatomy."
Ricci's performance at age 7 in a school Christmas play caught the attention of a local theatre critic, who suggested to her parents that she consider an acting career. She made her professional acting debut one year later in "Mermaids" in the pivotal role of Cher's youngest daughter and Winona Ryder's sister. As a child actor, Ricci won over audiences and critics alike with her winning portrayal of the strangely adorable Wednesday Addams in "The Addams Family." Her performance so delighted the film's creators and movie fans that Ricci was given an expanded role in the sequel, "Addams Family Values." She went on to star in the surprise hit of the summer 1995 season "Casper." For that Ricci received the prestigious NATO ShowEast Star of the Year Award and the Star of Tomorrow Award from the Motion Picture Booker's Club for her strong performances and the $100 million-plus box office successes of "Addams Family" and "Casper."
In 1997, Ricci made a seamless transition into more mature roles, receiving great acclaim in Ang Lee's ensemble film, "The Ice Storm," co-starring Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen and Elijah Wood; then starring as 'Dedee Truit,' in the scathing comedy "The Opposite of Sex," a performance which won her the Best Actress Award at the Seattle Film Festival; and as Layla in Vincent Gallo's "Buffalo 66." She was later nominated for a Golden Globe Award, an American Comedy Award, and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress for her work in "The Opposite of Sex," and earned a National Board of Review Best Supporting Actress Award for her combined efforts in "The Opposite of Sex," "Buffalo 66" and John Water's "Pecker." Some of Ricci's other projects include Wes Craven's "Cursed," Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Anything Else," Sally Potter's "The Man Who Cried" and a memorable cameo in Terry Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Additionally, Ricci starred opposite Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow," for which she won the Blockbuster Entertainment Award.
Ricci currently serves as the National Spokesperson for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) and is a member of the organization's National Leadership Council. RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization, operating the National Sexual Assault Hotline in partnership with over 1,100 rape crisis centers across the country. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

JOEL SILVER (Producer), one of the most prolific and successful producers in the history of motion pictures, has produced over 50 films, including the groundbreaking Matrix trilogy, the blockbuster four-part “Lethal Weapon” franchise, and the seminal action films “Die Hard” and “Predator.” To date, Silver’s catalog of films has earned nearly $10 billion in worldwide revenue from all sources.
Silver most recently produced the supernatural thriller “The Reaping,” starring Hilary Swank; and the action thriller “V For Vendetta,” starring Natalie Portman. Silver is currently producing a wide range of features, including “The Invasion,” a sci-fi thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig under the direction of Oliver Hirschbiegel; the psychological thriller “The Brave One,” directed by Neil Jordan and starring Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard; the comedy “Fred Claus,” starring Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti under the direction of David Dobkin; and the live-action adventure “Speed Racer,” to be written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, who previously collaborated with Silver on “The Matrix” movies.
Silver recently structured a deal for his Dark Castle Entertainment production company, which gives him green-lighting power and creative control of all films produced under the banner. The first Dark Castle film to go into production under the new structure will be “Whiteout,” a thriller to be directed by Dominic Sena, and starring Kate Beckinsale as the lone U.S. Marshal in Antarctica who has three days to solve a murder before winter’s darkness closes in, leaving her stranded with the killer.
Formed by Silver and Robert Zemeckis in the spirit of the late horror impresario William Castle, Dark Castle previously produced a string of hit films beginning with the record-breaking release of “House on Haunted Hill,” which opened at number one in 1999, followed by “Thir13en Ghosts” in 2001, “Ghost Ship” in 2002, “Gothika” in 2003 and “House of Wax” in 2005.
Silver’s 1999 production “The Matrix” grossed over $456 million globally, earning more than any other Warner Bros. Pictures film in the studio’s history at the time of its release. Universally acclaimed for its innovative storytelling and visuals, “The Matrix” won four Academy Awards, including the award for Best Visual Effects. The first DVD release to sell one million units, “The Matrix” DVD was instrumental in powering the initial sale of consumer DVD machines.
The second installment of the epic “Matrix” trilogy, “The Matrix Reloaded,” earned over $739 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The opening weekend box office receipts for “The Matrix Revolutions,” the final explosive chapter in the trilogy, totaled a staggering $203 million worldwide. To date, “The Matrix” franchise has grossed $3 billion from all sources worldwide.
While overseeing production on “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” Silver produced the integral video game “Enter the Matrix,” which features one hour of additional film footage written and directed by the Wachowski Brothers and starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Anthony Wong, who reprised their roles from the films. He also executive produced “The Animatrix,” a groundbreaking collection of nine short films inspired by the visionary action and innovative storytelling that power “The Matrix.”
More recently, Silver produced the action comedy thriller “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” written and directed by “Lethal Weapon” screenwriter Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan. He also produced the hit films “Romeo Must Die,” starring Jet Li and Aaliyah; “Exit Wounds,” starring Steven Seagal and DMX; and “Swordfish,” starring John Travolta, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.
Silver began his career at Lawrence Gordon Productions, where he ultimately ascended to President of Motion Pictures. During his tenure, he associate produced “The Warriors” and, with Gordon, produced “48 Hrs.,” “Streets of Fire” and “Brewster’s Millions.”
In 1985, Silver launched his Silver Pictures production banner with the breakout hit “Commando,” followed by “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Predator.” Silver Pictures solidified its status as one of the industry’s leading production companies with the release of the “Lethal Weapon” series, and the action blockbusters “Die Hard” and “Die Hard 2: Die Harder.” Silver also went on to produce “The Last Boy Scout,” “Demolition Man,” “Richie Rich,” “Executive Decision” and “Conspiracy Theory.”
A successful television producer as well, Silver executive produces the hit UPN television series “Veronica Mars,” the critically acclaimed crime drama starring Kristen Bell. Silver also executive produced, with Richard Donner, David Giler, Walter Hill and Robert Zemeckis, eight seasons of the award-winning HBO series “Tales From the Crypt,” as well as two “Tales From the Crypt” films.
As a student at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1967, Silver and a group of his friends developed a game called Ultimate Frisbee. The fast-moving team sport has since become a global phenomenon supported by tournaments in 50 countries.

Plot Summary: Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer—whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.
Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line.

YOKOHAMA BRINGS YOU SPEED RACER'S MACH 5!
Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Matthew Fox to Participate in Photo Opportunity
FULLERTON, Calif. (April 17, 2008) - Go Speed Racer! Go Yokohama Tire Corporation! That will be the rallying cry as Yokohama Tire announces plans to promote its relationship with Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming live-action family film Speed Racer at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (April 19) and Grand Prix of Utah (May 18). Yokohama's ADVAN® tires were named the official tire of the movie and Mach 5 race car earlier this year. The latest film by the Wachowski brothers and producer Joel Silver, creators of The Matrix trilogy, Speed Racer will open across North America in theatres and IMAX on May 9.
The Yokohama- and BP- sponsored Mazda LMP2 race car will feature Speed Racer movie logos as well as the famous letter "M" on the front. Drivers Ben Devlin and Gerardo Bonilla will each look the part, wearing specially-designed suits inspired by the movie. The suits will have blue tops and white bottoms and feature Speed Racer logos. The crew will also be in Speed Racer-designed shirts. In the ultimate nod to the Mach 5, the LMP2 race car's number will be changed from 8 to 5 exclusively for the two races in Long Beach and Utah.
"This is a special opportunity to link Yokohama's motorsports efforts with the promotion of a major motion picture like Speed Racer," said Fred Koplin, YTC director of marketing communications. "Away from the racetrack, there is presence with a national television campaign (April 7 - May 10) and in-store promotions with Advantage Yokohama Associate Dealers."
On Saturday, April 19 in Long Beach, Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox will be on hand as co-Grand Marshalls of the American Le Mans Series race. As part of their duties, they will give the start command to the field. The race can be seen tape-delayed on ABC, Sunday, April 20 at 12:30 pm ET (check local listings).
"Playing Speed Racer has given me a special appreciation for all things racing, so I ** thrilled to serve with Matthew Fox as a Grand Marshall of the American Le Mans race in Long Beach," said Emile Hirsch. "Every racing fan dreams of saying those immortal words to get the race underway, and I can't wait to tell the drivers to 'Start your engines!'"
In addition on Saturday, there will be a photo and video shoot featuring stars of the film - Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Matthew Fox- as well as the drivers and race car. Following the race activities, the stars will sign the driving suits, which will then be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) later in the year. Details will be posted to www.yokohamatire.com, www.mazdausa.com, and www.jdrf.org.
"I think it's safe to say that most race fans watched Speed Racer growing up and it's pretty cool to tie in the cartoon for both parents and the next generation of race fans and drivers," said Jim Jordan, alternative marketing manager, Mazda North American Operations. "I'm sure that Ben and Gerardo will both be claiming to be the real Speed Racer. This is the type of fun that Mazda set out to enjoy with the Yokohama tire people and we hope that the Speed Racer fans cheer on the B-K Motorsports team. I know the Mazda enthusiasts will be waiting for the Speed Racer movie to arrive at their local theater in May."

Stars Get Revved Up for 'Speed Racer'
"They took it to the next level," star EMILE HIRSCH tells ET of the new 'Speed Racer' movie. He should know; he plays the title character, Speed, who gets to tool around in the famously fast, gadget-filled Mach 5 racer.
Adapted from the famous '60s Japanese anime cartoon, 'Speed Racer' centers mostly on Speed's hyper-kinetic, pedal-to-the-metal face-offs.
But, most interestingly, the bright, action-packed children's film is directed by THE WACHOWSKI BROTHERS, the men behind 'The Matrix' trilogy.
"Lost" doc MATTHEW FOX plays the mysterious Racer X and says the directors made sure to keep their young audiences in mind.
"They were like, 'We want to make a movie that's a family movie, that our nieces and nephews could see.'"
Matt's role has already made a big impression on his son, BYRON. He tells ET that as soon as his children saw him on-set, "My little boy turns to my wife and goes, 'I want to be Racer X at Halloween next year!'"
'Speed Racer' zooms into theaters on Friday, May 9.

"Iron Man" Beats "Speed Racer" This Weekend
05-11-2008 (20:30:32)
"Speed Racer" appeared in theaters this weekend and even though it was one of Warner Bros' big summer releases, the movie only brought in $20 million. "Speed" came just barely ahead of "What Happens in Vegas." The Modestly budgeted comedy opened a bit ahead of expectations, grossing $20 million at 3,215 theaters for a per play average of $6,221.
Marvel's "Iron Man" kept soaring on its second week, dropping just 49% to $50.5 million. Relatively strong dropoff after a huge $100 million bow puts the superhero pic at a domestic total of $177.1 million. Average this weekend was $12,284 at 4,111 locations.
"Speed Racer" got just $5,605 on average from its 3,606 theaters. Final gross was well below already soft industry estimates for what Warners had hoped would be a summer blockbuster. Pic ended up playing primarily to families with young kids.
Photo finish between it and "Vegas" means the industry will have to wait for final numbers on Monday to see which ended up in No. 2.
Sony Pictures Classics took David Mamet's actioner "Redbelt" wide to 1,379 screens on its second weekend and managed only $1.1 million, or $827 per location.
In limited release, "Son of Rambow" expanded from five to 36 theaters and grossed $137,971, a modest $3,833 per screen. Total is $210,974. Paramount Vantage plans to expand the pic to between 75 and 90 locations on Friday.
ThinkFilm expanded romantic comedy "Then She Found Me" from 72 to 153 theaters for Mother's Day and grossed $489,072, or $3,197 per screen. Total on the Helen Hunt starrer is $912,086

Christina Ricci Talks "Speed Racer" Sequel
04-27-2008 (14:30:32)
Christina Ricci, who plays Speed's girlfriend in the upcoming "Speed Racer" movie, spoke to ComingSoon, revealing that the Wachowski brothers would consider making a sequel to their yet-to-be released film. "Yeah, definitely. Yes, that's definitely the impression I got," she said.
She added that the entire cast has been begging the brothers to make another installment as soon as the first one wrapped. "Larry and Andy created a world that they love and created characters that they loved and are attached to," said Ricci. "When we were all leaving, we were like 'write the sequel!' 'We want to come back'. And they were like, 'I know. I know. We're going to. Don't worry'."
As with most sequels, they depend on the success of the first film. "Speed Racer" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 9th.
"Speed Racer" Sequel Planned "
04-22-2008 (11:30:32)
During the "Speed Racer" press junket, Collider got the chance to speak to producer Joel Silver, who revealed that the Wachowskis are already planning a sequel to their yet-to-be released film.
"Look, they have a great story idea for a sequel to this movie (Speed Racer), we have a great idea for a sequel if it makes sense to make it," said Silver.
He also added that the next project on the Wachowskis' list is "Ninja Assasin," which will be directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and will begin filming mid-May. What's more, is that the brothers are already planning a sequel to that film as well. "They have a great idea for a sequel to Ninja if they want to make it," said Silver.

Böyle olunca da "Ghost in The Shell" (1995) gibi başyapıtları izlerken dahi özündeki fikri kavramak zorlaşıyor.
"Grand Prix"nin postmodern versiyonu
Kimler izlemeli?
Çizgi filmlerin sinema uyarlamalarını takip edenler.
Wachowski kardeşlerin filmografisini takip edenler.
Son yıllarda sinemayı yeni yan dalların etkilemesine ilgi duyanlar.
Kimler izlememeli?
Postmodern sinemadan hazzetmeyenler.
Wachowskiler'i sevmeyenler.
