Few actors get to enjoy the status of "overnight sensation". Next to none get to enjoy it twice. Yet this has happened to Clive Owen, the latest addition to the UK's canon of international superstars. Breaking through, back in 1990, as the wisecracking, sharp-suited wheeler-dealer Stephen Crane in the hit show Chancer, he was the hottest thing on TV. Then, after spending the best part of a decade seeking cinematic success, came the sleeper smash Croupier. Failing dismally in the UK, it looked at first to be a disaster. Yet the US critics loved it and, Stateside, it raked in millions, at the same time lifting Owen into the upper echelons. And, this time, he was ready.

Clive Owen was born on 3 October, 1964, in Coventry. His father, a Country and Western singer, walked out when he was three (he'd not meet him again for 16 years), and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, the latter working in the ticket office for British Rail. Clive was the fourth of five brothers. The eldest was Garry, now a salesman. Then came Alan and Lee, musicians (they'd release a single called Heartbeat), then Clive and Scott.

Attending Binley Park Comprehensive School, Clive was initially a good student, in the top stream. Then something thoroughly unexpected happened. Clive has often said that, for some unknown reason, he always wanted to act. But it was only after he played the Artful Dodger in a production of Oliver! that everyone else knew it too. Bitten badly by the bug, he couldn't concentrate on anything else, putting all his energy into the youth theatre he joined at 13. His schoolwork fell away dramatically. Sitting nine O-levels, he passed only one - English.

His persistence was amazing, really. When he first announced in class that he wanted to act, his teacher encouraged all the other kids to laugh at him. Thankfully the steely intensity he exudes onscreen is a real part of his character and he kept at it.

Düzgün fiziği ve karizmasıyla efsanevi aktör Sean Connery’i anımsatan yakışıklı oyuncu Clive Owen BBC televizyonunda çeşitli dizilerde rol aldıktan sonra 1998 yapımı ‘Croupier’ adlı filmdeki performansıyla adını sinema camiasına duyurdu.

3 Ekim 1964 tarihinde Coventry, İngiltere’de dünyaya gelen Clive Lise eğitimini yarıda bıraktıktan sonra iki sene boyunca devletin işsizler ve muhtaçlara bağladığı harçlıkla geçimini sürdürür. Oyuncu olmayı küçük yaşlarda aklına koyan çekici aktör 1984 yılında ‘Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’ adındaki oyunculuk okuluna girmeyi başarır. Tiyatro okulundan başarıyla mezun olan Owen ‘Young Vic’ isimli tiyatro topluluğuna katılarak çeşitli oyunlarda rol alır.

1986 yılında ‘Boon’ adlı TV dizisine misafir oyuncu olarak katılarak beyaz cam izleyicisinin önüne çıkan Owen’ın beyaz perdedeki ilk deneyimi 1988 yapımı ‘Vroom’ adlı filmde aldığı rol olur. 1991 yılında takıntılı bir adamı canlandırdığı ‘Close My Eyes’daki performansıyla dikkatleri üzerine çeken yakışıklı oyuncu biseksüel bir karakteri canlandırdığı ‘Bent’deki rolüyle eleştirmenlerden tam not almayı başarır.

Oyunculuk kariyerinde hızla yükselmeye devam eden Owen 2000 yılında Toronto Film Festivali’nde gösterilen ‘Greenfingers’ adlı komedide Helen Mirren ile birlikte rol alır. Sinemanın yanısıra ilk göz ağrısı tiyatroyu da ihmal etmemeye çalışan başarılı aktör Ang Lee ve Guy Ritchie gibi Hollywood’un gözde yönetmenlerinin çektiği kısa filmlerde rol alır. Robert Altman’ın yönettiği ‘Gosford Park’ın ardından tüm dünyada olduğu gibi ülkemizde de büyük beğeni toplayan bazı filmlerde dünyaca ünlü oyuncularla birlikte yer alır. Bu filmlerden bazıları 2002’de Matt Damon ile birlikte rol aldığı ‘The Bourne Identity’, 2003 yılında beyaz perdenin seksi yıldızı Angelina Jolie ile birlikte oynadığı ‘Beyond the Borders’ ve ‘King Arthur’dur.

Kısa zamanda iş yaşamındaki hedeflerine ulaşmayı başararak Hollywood’un aranan oyuncuları arasında yerini alan Owen’ı son olarak başrollerini Julia Roberts, Jude Law ve Natalie Portman ile paylaştığı ‘Closer’da izliyoruz.

İngiltere’nin Hollywood’u sayılan, Pinewood Stüdyoları’nda "Son Umut" filminin başrol oyuncularından Clive Owen film hakkında ne diyor?


İngiltere’nin Hollywood’u sayılan, Pinewood Stüdyoları’nda, Son Umut filminin setindeyim.Kamera arkasındaki isim en gizemli ve de benim en sevdiğim Harry Potter filmi olan Harry Potter ve Azkaban Tutsağı’nı çekmiş olan Meksikalı yönetmen Alfonso Cuaron. Onun eşliğinde bir set gezisi yapıyorum.

Filmde Theo’nun arkadaşı Jasper’ın evi ve onu içine alan orman aslında Pinewood’daki stüdyolardan birinin içinde bulunuyor. Tamamen suni bir ağaçlar topluğu var evin etrafında. Ve derken bu aslında yapay ama filmde son derece gerçek görünen ormanın ucunda filmin başrol oyuncusu Clive Owen görünüyor.

Son Umut, insanoğlunun üreyemediği, terörizm, hava kirliği ve ayaklanmaların arttığı yakın gelecekte geçiyor. Owen filmde yıllar sonra hamile kalmayı başarabilmiş tek kadını güvenli ellere teslim etmek için çaba harcayan eski bir eylemci rolünde.

Setin başlamasına az süre kalmışken, kısa bir röportaj yapmak üzere, çekimler arasında dinlenmek, banyo yapmak, uyumak ve giyinip, soyunmak için kullandığı karavanına gidiyoruz. O etkileyici sesiyle, “Güzel kahve yaparım, ister misin?” diyor. Ne demek. Karşımdaki Clive Owen, elinden ne olsa içilir. Ve biz kahveleri yudumlarken, röportaj başlıyor.

Benim için önemli olan doğru yönetmenle çalışmak. Senaryo ve rolüm sonradan geliyor. Ve film seçerken hep içgüdülerime güveniyorum. İnanırsam, ağzımdan evet çıkması uzun sürmez. İkilemleri olan, ne yapacağı önceden kestirilemeyen karakterleri canlandırmaktan hoşlanıyorum. Hiçbirimiz sadece iyi, kötü ya da siyah, beyaz değiliz çünkü.

Son Umut bizleri karanlık ve acı dolu bir geleceğe götürüyor. Filmde ne bulacak izleyiciler?
Film günümüzde de var olan kısırlık, göç, terörizm, çevre kirliliği gibi sorunları geleceğe taşıyor. Üstelik tüm bu sorunlar daha da vahim boyutlara gelmiş. Son Umut gelecekte geçmesine rağmen günümüze ait, hepimizi ilgilendiren konuları işliyor aslında.

Sonuçta karşımızda bir roman uyarlaması var. Senaryo, P.D. James ’in romanından ne kadar farklı?
Ana tema aynı olsa da film kitaptan çok farklı. 18 yıldır kimsenin çocuğu olmamış ve filmin kahramanı hamile kalmayı başarmış olan kadına kol kanat germek zorunda. Ama Alfonso Cuaron şu anda yaşadığımız dünyanın tüm sorunlarını çok iyi değerlendirerek olayların nereye gideceğini iyi hesapladığı bir film koyuyor önümüze. İnsanlar Son Umut’un bilimkurgu olduğunu düşünürlerse hayal kırıklığına uğrarlar. Tam tersi bir filmle karşılaşacaklar çünkü. 20 yıl sonrasının dünyası şu andakinden çok daha kötü olarak resmediliyor bu filmde.

Alfonso sizin de söylediğiniz gibi her seti titizlikle hazırlayan, her detayla birebir ilgilenen bir yönetmen. Öyle uzun planlar çekiyor ki, kendinizi tüm olan bitenin, çatışmanın içinde dans ederken buluyorsunuz. O uzun planlarda yanlış yapmak istemiyor insan. Hem onun emeğine acıyorsunuz hem de doğrusu aynı sahnenin bir kez daha hazırlanması için saatlerce beklemek yerine bir kerede bitirmek işinize geliyor. Kimse tüm o hazırlıkları mahveden kişi konumuna düşmek istemiyor.

Onun en çok hangi özelliğini seviyorsunuz?
Pek çok sahnede kamerayı sırtıma dayayıp, o dünyayı benim gözümden anlatması hoşuma giden özelliklerden biri. Bunun sinema açısından çok etkileyici bir yaklaşım olduğunu düşünüyorum. Pek çok yönetmen kahramanın yüzünü gösterip, bu adam ne kadar acı çekiyor, bakın görün, derken, Alfonso benim ötemdeki dünyayı gösterip, genel bir resimden bakıyor olaylara. Theo’yu içinde bulunduğu dünya ile birlikte sunuyor izleyiciye. Bu resimler sayesinde anlatmak istediğini mükemmel anlattığını düşünüyorum.

Canlandırdığınız karakteri nasıl tanımlarsınız?
Theo kendi haline, içine kapanık bir karakter. Umudunu yitirmiş, yaşadığı dünyaya inancı kalmamış biri. Hikaye ilerlerken onun umutlarının da yeniden doğduğuna tanık oluyoruz.

Theo, o her ne kadar kendiyle övünmüyor olsa da, bir kahraman. Ama farklı bir kahraman, öyle değil mi?
Hem de nasıl. Hiçbir zaman doğru dürüst ayakkabılar giymiyor mesela. Parmak arası terliklerle dolaşan bir kahraman düşünebiliyor musunuz? İşte Theo böyle bir kahraman. Aksiyon sahnelerinde terlik giyiyor. Bu bile Cuaron’un klişe bir kahramandan uzak durmak istemesinin ufak ama net bir örneği. Ben şu anda bitkin, yorgun, alkolik bir kahramanı oynuyorum.

Variety Gazetesi’nin haberinde, 3 yıl önce birlikte film çeviren oyuncuların bu kez “Duplicity” adındaki filmde iki sevgiliyi canlandıracakları bildirildi.
