POOLE'S entrepreneurial co-promoter Matt Ford is hunting down a super fan to become the new Pirates of the Carib-bean star Captain Jack Sparrow on race nights.

Ford is placing an advert in the club's Good Friday programme asking for eccentric supporters to apply for the role as a Johnny Depp lookalike to act out the role during Wednesday meetings at Wimborne Road.

Ford revealed: "With the new Pirates of the Caribbean 3 film due out in May, we believe this is the perfect opportunity for the club to have a Captain Jack Sparrow mascot.

"Their task will be to add to the meeting's presentation, go wild in front of the grandstand whenever the team get a maximum 5-1 heat win and generally mingle with the crowd.

"We will provide all the clothing and make-up.

"The winning candidate will be the person who shows me they have the credentials to be a bit of an entertainer and has the capabilities of being Dorset's answer to the new legend Captain Jack."

Ford also admitted that the winning entrant could be male or female.

"If they show me they are good enough, the role will be theirs," he said.

Interested parties are asked to contact Matt Ford at Poole Speedway, Stadium Way, Poole, Dorset and provide a photo and contact number.

"I guarantee I will reply to everyone," added Ford.

"We believe this will be a fabulous addition to the night's entertainment and, of course, if we have a good response, the winner will become quite a star when Sky Sports cameras are at the stadium live on Monday, April 23."

More Pirates? LA Times story contains rumors of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4

Once again, rumors are circulating that Captain Jack Sparrow may not hang up his compass for good at the end of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. According to Mary MacNamara's story in the Los Angeles Times, "Word on the Walt Disney Studios backlot is that, while AT WORLD'S END is the end of the trilogy, it may not be the end of the franchise. According to insiders, Johnny Depp has said he would be interested in keeping the swaggering Capt. Jack Sparrow alive in other pirate adventures and, as the film's production director Rick Heinrichs says, 'If Johnny's interested, why wouldn't they?'" Adds MacNamara, "Many of the larger set pieces have been kept and put in storage."

Storage will need to be long-term, since Johnny is scheduled to film SHANTARAM for Mira Nair beginning in November; one current rumor on the web which suggests filming of PIRATES 4 would begin in August 2007 is completely false, and has been denied by screenwriter Terry Rossio on his website. Any future piracy, if it happens, will be many months down the road--say, after a script has been written and deals have been signed.

The franchise's largest set piece, The Black Pearl, has returned from her winter berth in Ensenada, Mexico, and is currently anchored in San Pedro; you can see new pictures of the Pearl on the Zone's Porch forum. Bilmiyorum :img-haha: Yni 1aralar ben de Elizabeth ve Jack in bir arada olmasını istiyordum ama sonuçta kızın onu ölüme göndermesi olayı da var. 1de yni denilenler doğruysa zaten Jack Elizabeth ten kaçmaya çalışıyor ki. Will'in öncelikli yapması gereken şey Davy Jones'un kalbine ulaşmaktı. Bu kolay olmayacaktı. Çok uzun zaman önce Davy Jones kalbini çıkarıp bir sandığın içine koymuştu. Şimdi o sandık Lord Beckett adında kaba bir adamın elindeydi.

He's the Wizard of Odd on the road less traveled. Among movie clones and conformers, actor Johnny Depp has blazed his own trail. Some of his films have succeeded beyond wildest studio expectations. Some have crashed and burned and have never been heard from again. But freakish or tender, profound or peculiar, Johnny Depp is ever-changing, an actor endlessly exploring the ramifications of the strange and the wonderful, a voyager going where few have gone before.

A glance at his beginnings did not indicate thespian promise. Born in the provincial wilderness of Owensboro, Kentucky, and raised in Florida, Depp dropped out of school at 15 to follow that all-American dream of growing up to be a rock star. A chance meeting with actor Nicolas Cage led to a few small film roles and a recurring part on a popular television series, 21 Jump Street, which turned him into a teen-age heartthrob. But Depp's willingness to take a chance on peculiar roles led to his breakout part in 1990 as the digitally-challenged Edward Scissorhands for director Tim Burton, the first in a continuing collaboration between actor and director. Ed Wood in 1994 saw Depp dressed in women's angora sweaters as he directed a depressed Bela Lugosi (played by Martin Landau) in a series of truly awful vampire movies. Five years later, in Sleepy Hollow, Depp put on a characteristic Burtonian eccentricity to play Ichabod Crane going "mano y mano" with the Headless Horseman. In 2005, the dangerous duo riffed on the joys of necrophilia in The Corpse Bride and then took author Roald Dahl's children's classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory out for a ride, losing themselves in a steaming swamp of acid colors and geisha girl coyness. They're now filming Sweeney Todd, a character construct of the demon barber of Fleet Street, who in nineteenth-century London turned his customers into meat pies. The partnership of Depp and Burton, sign-posted by a notice "beware all who enter here," continues to flourish.

In Edward Scissorhands, Depp pioneered the persona that he has honed over 17 years and nearly 40 movies, that of the weak or frail or flawed outsider who has difficulty dealing with unimaginative reality. Where television tried to turn him into a teen-age hunk, movies have allowed him to become an eccentric character actor playing leading man parts. Even in films where he plays the silent type, such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Depp projects a profound vulnerability, a nearly neurotic shyness that hides behind floppy hair, eccentric hats and a seductive personality. Mix odd, unique, bizarre, whimsical and outlandish with profound, sensitive, gentle and soulful, add a scoop of The Wizard of Oz, a soupçon of Peter Pan and a dash of Romeo and Juliet and you get Depp at his best. Nominated in 2005 for a Best Actor Oscar for his tender, complex and remarkably buttoned down performance as Peter Pan author James M. Barrie in Finding Neverland, Depp had a key scene playing pirates with a small boy. Ironically, it has been a pirate who has propelled the actor to international stardom and box office riches — a pirate named Captain Jack Sparrow.

Ironic as it seems and having spent most of his career hiding behind the mask of eccentric characters in small productions, Depp is now king of the world on his own pirate ship. The final installment of the trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World's End, with a host of international stars — Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Yun-Fat Chow, Bill Nighy, Geoffrey Rush, Jonathan Pryce and Stellan Skarsgard, with a special appearance by Rolling Stones' Keith Richards as Captain Jack's father — is due to open in May. But good as they are, none of these actors captain this particular pirate ship. Ask the lines at the box office who they want to see — the hand at the helm is a shy and retiring character actor named Johnny Depp.

One day Orlando Bloom was in awe at his luck for being paid huge sums of money to do something he loves, until his swashbuckling costar, Johnny Depp, brought him back to reality.

"I was talking to Johnny (Depp) on the set (of Pirates of the Caribbean) one time. I said, 'Can you believe they pay you this much money to do a job you love?' " Bloom told Elle magazine.

"And he said, 'Privacy becomes really expensive.' It's true."

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer could be seen as something of a modern day pirate in the sense that he has invaded and conquered prime television with hits like C.S.I., The Amazing Race, Cold Case and Without A Trace. And this after he conquered Hollywood with too many hits to name. Yet it is all dwarfed by the accomplishments of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy, which has succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest expectations and promises to live on for generations to come.

In the following Q&A, he provides some insight into the making of what could be the final Pirates film, At World’s End.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: It’s been suggested that the Pirates trilogy is really old-fashioned movie making at its best; a throwback, in a sense. Do you agree with that?

JERRY BRUCKHEIMER: It is, but we still have to add the visual effects to it. In the old days you didn’t have to do much of that. The way effects elements were added made things second or third generation in terms of quality, and now everything is first generation which looks beautiful. But the storytelling is old-fashioned in a way and so is the way Gore [Verbinski] has filmed them.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: It seems like you tried to shoot as much of it as you could on the set or, in this case, on the sea.

JERRY: We definitely did. That was important to us.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: Which is definitely going against the trend of modern moviemaking.

JERRY: Well, it depends on the movie and the director. Some directors much prefer doing it on the stage rather than on the computer with visual effects.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: Based on the DVD documentaries, it seemed as though the story like everything else was in a state of evolution throughout the making of the second film. Was the same true on the third?

JERRY: It constantly evolves. The writers are on the set all the time, the actors have wonderful ideas, so we’re constantly making corrections and additions to what we are filming. So it’s always changing.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: There’s not a lot out there on the story for At World’s End. What can you tell us about it?

JERRY: It’s basically the quest to find Jack Sparrow. Once they do find him, each character has an agenda. Will wants to find his father and save his father. Elizabeth wants to be with Will and Jack doesn’t ever want to go back to Davy Jones’ locker. So they each are working with their own agenda. And of course Beckett is wanting to control the seas, which with control of Davy Jones [by having Davy Jones’ heart] he has. He’s devouring the pirates, so it’s the pirates’ last stand amongst all the individual characters and what each character wants to accomplish.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: Based on the trailer, you’ve got a coming together of different pirates from around the world.

JERRY: That’s right. They’re trying to protect the seas from Beckett and Davy Jones and save their kind from extinction.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: When I spoke to writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott last year, they made it pretty clear that At World’s End truly was the end; that a fourth film would have to represent a drastic change in approach.

JERRY: I think what we tried to accomplish in At World’s End is that this is the end of the trilogy; this is the end of the story. We’ve taken Will from being this naïve young blacksmith and turned him into this adventurer; and Elizabeth from being this young, beautiful governor’s daughter to the point where she’s almost a pirate; and Captain Jack, of course, being Captain Jack, always looking out for himself and trying to get the Black Pearl. This will be the end of that particular story with these characters. So if a Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 was to happen, it would have to be something very different.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: When you look back at the Pirates trilogy, what’s your feeling about what was able to be accomplished in its making?

JERRY: It’s really exciting, because you go into these things and you never know what you’re going to end up with. I knew I had a world-class filmmaker and a world-class cast and screenwriters, and when you put that kind of creative energy together you usually get some explosive things, and that’s exactly what happened with Pirates. It all comes down to the talent, both in front of the camera and behind the camera.

GEEKMONTHLY.COM: Did it surpass your expectations from when you began?

JERRY: I never have expectations. I hope for the best and expect the worst. I go in with the hope that we’ll survive and, of course, we did more than survive.

According to Sankei Newpaper, Buena Visata (US) announced the details of the world premiere of AWE and they also mentioned that Johnny is going to come to Japan.

Johnny will attend the world premiere in LA on May 19 then will come to Tokyo on May 21 or 22 to attend the Asia premiere.
Buena Vista Japan is now preparing their schedule in Japan.

According to the article, the stars/stuff who will come to Japan are:
Johnny Depp
Geoffrey Rush
Bill Nighy
Gore Verbinsky
Jerry Bruckheimer

The detail of the Asia premiere itself is still confidential,
but they said the budget will be "Million-dollars."
So, it must be a huge event.

"It's a hard life!" laughs Naomi Harris."Lying on the beach, playing cards, going horseriding, canoeing.."

Buzz's heart bleeds at this tale of woe, but such are the difficulties of filming Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, in the Bahamas. Returning as mystrious witch-doctor Tia Dalma - having squeeezed Miami Vice in between Pirates 1 and 2 - even the sea sick problems of filming on water floated past Harris.

"I was absolutley fine," laughs the 30 year old, " but the others were dropping like flies. The lens technician was on his knees and had to beg to be taken off the ship and Martin Klebba ( playing Marty the diminutive Black Peaarl Pirate) ended up throwing up over the side of the ship."

Swamp bound for Dead Man's chest, Ms Dalma stretches her sea legs in dogged pursuit of Captain Jack Sparrow in World's End, sailing in the company of one Captain Barbossa. Hang on isn't he dead? "It's a fantasy!" she scolds Buzz. "People come alive again! When we find Jack Sparrow he's gone a bit crazy in Davy Jones' locker. Well craz-ier." This time round, she even gets to buckle a bit of swash. Sort of " I throw a bomb!" is all she'll reveal.

When Buzz chats to Harris she's packing her bags for New York to start shooting August opposite Josh Hartnett, the latest step in the 30 year olds stealthy rise from acclaimed British TV such as White Teeth to zombie battling in 28 Days Later... through to Hollywood maga blockbusters. August, which sees Hartnett try to save his dot.com business in the month leading up to 9/11, is a few million dollars away from Pirates, isn't it? "You've got to mix it up haven't you?" she grins.

Pirates of The Caribbean: At World's End opens on 24 May and will be reviewed in a future issue.

Screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio swap sea stories on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End’

When we last left effeminate, addle-brained Captain Jack Sparrow—portrayed with scenery-munching glee by Johnny Depp—the pirate was presumed trapped in the netherworld of Davy Jones’ Locker, consigned to a fate that involves no end of torture, pathos and a steady diet of ragweed.

While Sparrow may not know his salvation is pending, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio do.

The screenwriting team has penned all three of Disney’s theme-park-turned-blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, including May 25’s “At World’s End.” And even though attempting to siphon hints about the grand finale is like sailing on sand, Wizard still attempted to make the scribes walk the proverbial plank.

As the film opens, with Depp’s Sparrow imprisoned in a wasteland, cohorts “Will [Orlando Bloom] and Elizabeth [Kiera Knightley] arrive in Singapore in their quest to find and rescue him,” offers the duo. (Elizabeth, fans may recall, actually trapped Sparrow on a doomed ship in order to avoid the wrath of the monstrous Kraken.) “The world is suffering at the hands of Lord Cutler Beckett, with Davy Jones on his side. Elizabeth is suffering from guilt, Will from jealousy. And everyone is suffering from the lack of Captain Jack Sparrow.”

In “Dead Man’s Chest,” opposition was around every spin of the compass, with Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) looking to eradicate piracy on the open seas and tentacle-chinned Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), who once raised Sparrow’s ship, eager to settle their debt.

For “World’s End,” both Elliott and Russio maintain the villains may not be so easily spotted. “The fun of a pirate movie is to explore moral ambiguity,” they muse. “Each character faces a moment of choice, where their actions could be taken as villainy. Our theme would place the main villain as having selfish pursuits unrestrained by right and wrong. That’s a villain who can appear anywhere, from a pirate to a representative of the law.”

One such ambiguous player is Sao Feng, an Asian pirate portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). “He’s the Pirate Lord of the South China Sea, one of the Nine Pirate Lords that make up the Brethren Court,” explain the pair. He sees the end of the era of piracy coming, he see the final stand coming, and desires only to be on the winning side.”

That goes double for Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the ghostly apparition that terrorized Depp and company in the first film and returned at the climax of the second to possibly help find Sparrow.

“Geoffrey Rush is our secret weapon,” the scribes proclaim. “His contribution was, we believe, vastly underrated on the first film. His character and his performance very much define the flavor of the series.”

For the role of Captain Teague, a weather-worn pirate who may or may not be Captain Jack’s father, producers indulged Depp’s notion that Sparrow was based on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards by actually casting the leathery rocker in the part. “We’re not sure there is a ‘father’ role in the film. The role was written with Keith in mind. But the part, while small, is pivotal enough that if he wasn’t available, it would have been re-cast.”

Central to the franchise’s success has been Teague’s maybe-offspring, the braggadocio, skittish Sparrow. And despite the opinion of some of his shipmates, the anti-hero of “Pirates” is no sissy. “Jack Sparrow is in no way a coward,” say the writers. “He may take a seemingly cowardly action merely in order to buy time. The secret to the Jack Sparrow character, what makes him powerful, is that the universe is ultimately on his side. Jack knows if he merely survives long enough, eventually the universe will come around and give him an opening. Then he pounces on it.”

Sparrow’s destiny is likely to lie in the open waters; for star-crossed lovers Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, it may be on the altar. “We will say that both characters undergo transformations,” tease Elliott and Rossio. “If you track them across all three movies, those two characters are the ones who change and grow the most.”

And despite Sparrow’s antics, “We’ve always felt Elizabeth is the real protagonist of the films.”

With the players in motion, Elliott and Rossio turned to a crucial element of any summer movie experience: the expensive set pieces. “Whereas ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ had several action sequences on land—the rolling water wheel, the bone cages—the major set pieces of ‘At World’s End’ take place on the ocean.” Expect to see ships in full action mode on water, along with the requisite swashbuckling: One sequence is rumored to take place between Sparrow and Jones on top of a crow’s nest during a storm.

And what of a fourth film? “The final two films are designed to complete a trilogy,” reply the writers. “A third sequel is dependent on too many factors to make any type of guess right now. It’s not impossible to do a fourth film. A lot depends on whether…there is audience desire for more of these.”

If the billion-plus dollars in box-office booty for the first two entries are any indication, our forecast is Captain Jack will be back.

Magazine: At the end of the shooting of potc 3, you said goodbye to the character of Jack Sparrow. What did you feel the last time you took off his costume?

JD: I felt of course sad because I don’t know if I’ll see Jack again one day. I don’t know if it’s a goodbye or a farewell, because nothing has been decided about a possible fourth episode. For the moment, I feel like I’ve said goodbye to an old friend with whom I have passed wonderful and unforgettable times. However, like all the characters I’ve acted, Jack’s character will always stay within me forever. I also tell myself that, if I feel like it, I can always get out his costume from the boxes in order to give fun to my kids. [laughter]

Magazine: Can you explain this extraordinary infatuation that the audience feels for the character?

JD: No, not at all. All of this is very mysterious to me. What I know is that, when I received my role, my aim was to create a character would please children just as much as grand-parents. But I hadn’t expected that he would become such a phenomenon! To see how much Jack is loved in the four corners of the Earth is for me a huge source of satisfaction. It touches me enormously. Each time I meet children that disguise themselves like him and imitate him, I’m deeply moved. It’s the most beautiful compliment someone can give me.

Magazine: Can you give us some revelations about the third movie? Everybody is wondering what has happened to Jack after he was swallowed by the Kraken.

JD: All I can say is that Jack is going to find himself in a very strange place, a kind of fourth dimension located at the bottom of the ocean, that resembles a bit to hell. [laughter] There, he will be confronted with dozens of different versions of himself, each of them representing a facet of his personality, but pushed to the extreme. It’s an idea that I immediately found fascinating and I took huge fun playing all those different versions of Jack. Although, I can’t tell you how Jack will be rescued from this place…

Magazine: What was the hardest thing to shoot for this third movie?

JD: A big part of the action of AWE is happening on the sea, much more than in the two previous movies. I’ve had to shoot a lot of sequences under the water, which is something very strange for an actor. There are also other action sequences that are completely loony who, in terms of madness, goes beyond some sequences of DMC. Several times, before shooting a scene, I was telling myself: “this is the weirdest thing I’ve ever done.” But in the end I got used to it and, at the end of the shooting, finding myself in a situation that was simply hard to believe ended up looking something completely normal for me. [laughter]

Magazine: What can you tell us about the return of Captain Barbossa?

JD: His return will give place to very amusing scenes. Jack and Barbossa will have to collaborate in order to succeed in their mission and, taking into account their past disputes, everything will not go without troubles. In fact, in this film, Jack and Barbossa are behaving a bit like a couple of old ladies that can’t stop arguing for nothing. Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa) and me took loads of fun shooting those scenes. During the shooting of the first film, we felt a bit sad to have so few scenes together in the end and we were waiting impatiently for the day when we would finally be able to give ourselves the answer again.

Magazine: And what about the relationship of Jack and Elizabeth? (in French they use the word “relation” which has a girlfriend-boyfriend connotation).

JD: If I were Jack, I would keep my distances with Elizabeth after what she did to him at the end of the second movie. But go know if he’ll share the same opinion…[laughter] (in French this is a sarcastic phrase meaning that Jack will not share JD’s opinion: therefore will not stay away from Elizabeth and on the contrary will want to be very close to her).

Magazine: We know that you watch very rarely the films in which you play, but are you impatient of watching this one?

JD: Yes, I really can’t wait to see to what will resemble the final result because, in my mind, all that we’ve shot seems to me very confused. [laughter] In fact, we’ve shot some sequences of the film one and a half year ago, during the shooting of DMC and, we shot the continuation of those scenes only very recently. In the film, those two sequences follow each other immediately, but, for us, one and a half year has passed between those two sequences! But with the talent of the technicians, I’m sure that this will be invisible! [laughter]

CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW’S EPIC JOURNEY CONTINUES IN PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN AT WORLD’S END.

“WHAT WOULD ANY OF YOU be willing to do, hmmm? Would you sail to de ends of de Earth and beyond to fetch back witty Jack and him precious Pearl?” challenges the voodoo priestess Tia Dalma at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Of course, the colorful Captain Jack Sparrow has just been eaten by a kraken, so the gang is naturally a bit upset. Agreeing probably seems like a good idea until Captain Barbossa, with a little help from Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), suddenly pops up back from the dead to help them brave “the weird and haunted shores at World’s End.”

“How many epic fantasy adventure trilogies have ever been made? Only Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter movies,” says writer Terry Rossio, who along with his writing partner Ted Elliott wrote all three Pirates of the Caribbean films. “It doesn’t happen that often, and certainly not with the difficulty of shooting ships on the high seas. The success of the first two films allowed enough of a budget for the third film that have never been attempted before in cinema.”

The Pirates trilogy of films began with Curse of the Black Pearl and continued with Dead Man’s Chest. The grand finale, At World’s End, “brings to a conclusion the stories of Will Turner [Orlando Bloom], Elizabeth Swann [Keira Knightley], Captain Jack Sparrow [Johnny Depp] and Captain Barbossa [Geoffrey Rush],” says Rossio.

The new movie will literally take the characters to the end of the world as they travel treacherous waters in an attempt to save Jack from the “mind-bending” trap of Davy Jones’ locker in an adventure that will challenge each of them. Meanwhile, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman, wreak havoc across the seven seas, threatening to destroy the freedom-loving pirate way of life.

English actress Naomie Harris, who plays the voodoo priestess Tia Dalma in the final two films, believes the new film is “going to be just as exciting [as Dead Man’s Chest], and there are quite a few new characters being introduced, like Chow Yun-Fat’s Chinese pirate, Sao Feng. The whole cast of characters goes to the end of the world to rescue Jack Sparrow and try and see if he’s still alive. My character, Tia Dalma, goes on the journey with them to find him,” says Harris.

While there’s no lack of excitement about the final installment in the pirate trilogy, can At World’s End possibly top the first two films? “I understand the impulse to ask that question, but it’s sort of like asking whether the third act of Romeo and Juliet is better than acts one and two. All three tell one overall story, and what good is the third act without setups, and what good are the setups without the payoffs?

“What you are really asking, I think, is ‘Will the experience of watching the third film be more enjoyable and satisfying experience than watching either of the first two films?’ To which I must reply, perhaps not, because there is no way to recapture that feeling of pure newness that the first film created,” says Rossio. “We invented a lot that was new for Dead Man’s Chest—the Davy Jones character, Lord Beckett and the East India Trading Company, rolling bone cages, a three-way sword fight on a spinning water wheel, Bootstrap Bill cursed to crew the Flying Dutchman, a ship that sails underwater, a heart cut out and still beating buried in a chest, Tia Dalma in her swamp, Captain Jack with a black spot running from a giant kraken that sucks entire ships down to the depths, etc… and still the critics were split as to whether it was a good film. All that we sort of barely got by. I suspect it will be the same with At World’s End—no matter what our level of inventiveness or clever dialogue, etc., it won’t be compared to the first movie. It will be compared to the experience of seeing the first movie. And that’s hard to beat.”

However, At World’s End does have one advantage that the first two films did not. “What we’ve got going for us in the film is the power of ending, the power of completion. Dead Man’s Chest was a middle film. With At World’s End we can finish the story, resolve character fates and character relationships,” he says.

To that end, Rossio states writing the third film wasn’t just a matter of “revisiting the material so much as completing it. Pirates 2 and 3 were filmed together and complete the story of Pirates 1. So we’re finishing the tale. Certainly the success of the first two films raises the bar and creates enormous expectations. That can be a problem in that it’s easier for an audience to let themselves be wowed if they’re not expecting much.”

According to Rossio, the films use “an odd blend” of comedy, action, horror, romance and drama, which means that different aspects of the films appeal to different people. “It’s always a question how far we can push audiences. For example, we challenge the audience to enjoy a technique that has not been popular in many years: to allow a film to contain multiple reality worlds. In Dead Man’s Chest, the reality world of the slapstick on Cannibal Island was not he same reality world of throats being cut. The audience is asked to be adept at shifting gears.”

Through the first two movies, that odd blend worked to create a rich world filled with unique characters. For the final film, the challenge became keeping the running time down, considering all the storylines and characters that were involved. “Add Geoffrey Rush back, and Sao Feng character, played by Chow Yun-Fat, along with all the new characters invented for Dead Man’s Chest. That’s quite a collection of characters, and all deserve their moments,” he says.

The incredible cast helped created the wealth of rich characters that peopled his world, says Rossio. “There was a moment where, on the deck of the ship, we got to see Geoffrey Rush, Naomie Harris, Chow Yun-Fat, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, all together in a single scene. Any one of those actors could open a movie, and we had six! Not to mention Jack Davenport, Jonathan Pryce, Lee Arenberg, Mackenzie Crook and Kevin McNally. Wow.”

One of the new characters created for Dead Man’s Chest was Harris’ Tia Dalma. The mysterious character has been the subject of much speculation on the internet. Was she one of Jack’s past lovers? Or perhaps she’s Davy Jones’ love, Calypso, the goddess of the sea? And if Tia Dalma can bring Captain Barbossa back from the dead, what else can she do as the characters travel to the end of the world?

“Naomie gives the story-world a most crucial ingredient: complete and absolute conviction. It is out of that conviction, I think, that all those subtle and realistic, fascinating nuances emerge,” says Rossio. “George Lucas was asked once how he accounted for the success of Star Wars. His answer was that every member of his cast each totally believed in their role, in the reality of the film. They made it work for audiences by making it work for themselves. That’s what Naomie does. There is not one half-second of falseness or hesitation in her performance, no matter what the fantastic situation. Because she believes, we believe.”

Harris, who has studied acting since she was 9 years old, starred in the hit zombie flick 28 Days Later as the machete-wielding Selina, and in Michael Mann’s big-screen version of Miami Vice. The beautiful young actress seems to be making a career of playing strong women, and Tia Dalma is no exception.

“It is genuinely a lot of fun playing a larger-than-life character and being so playful in the way Tia Dalma is. I love Tia Dalma’s energy. She’s just in love with life, and she’s in a great position because she’s a very powerful woman,” says Harris.

“It’s not often as an actress you get the opportunity to play a character like that. She’s really playful and fun and sexual and sensual, but she’s also an incredibly powerful woman. And she has all the cards up her sleeve. There’s a lot of stuff that she’s not giving away about who she is and what her true intentions are. She’s very multilayered, and that, for me, is something that’s really exciting to play.”

As she began to work on the character, developing the mysterious voodoo woman gave her a freedom she hasn’t often been able to explore. “There were just so many different directions that you could go in terms of playing Tia Dalma. Normally, with other roles, the sides are clearly laid out. Who the character is, what their past is and who they are. They’re often somebody that you feel like you’ve met in your past, or you could have a clear vision of who they are. So you’re kind of constricted by that vision. Whereas with Tia Dalma it was a total work of the imagination, because she could have been anything, and that’s much more fun,” says Harris.

So now that Tia is going to get out of her swamp to join the gang on a rousing adventure in search of Jack in At World’s End, does that mean she takes up sword fighting next to the dashing Will and plucky Elizabeth? “I’ll leave that to them, because I have voodoo dolls,” she laughs. “But I get to throw a bomb. I was happy with that.”

Still, it wasn’t all a fun time. Tia Dalma’s unusual teeth gave her some issues. “Those false teeth that I had to wear made it very difficult to talk. So trying to tackle dealing with those in your mouth and the Jamaican accent and trying to be clear so the audience can understand, that was a challenge.”

She admits her character changed in At World’s End. “She’s very different, because in the third movie Tia Dalma is a lot more intense. She’s got a very clear idea about what she wants and her mission. And she’s intent about bringing it all about. So she’s less playful and less sexual and so on. She’s not about fun anymore. She’s about business.

While Harris doesn’t want to give much of the script away, she will say there’s a “very surprise ending in terms of my character, but I can’t really talk about that without giving the game away.”

Surprise endings, a visit to Davy Jones’ locker and a pirate adventure to die for. “People really should be surprised. The filmmakers didn’t play it safe at all. There isn’t so much of the action/comedy that made the second film different from the first. And the third film is darker and, frankly weirder. Quite a risk for the studio to let a big-budget summer film get ambitious, and complex and, dare I say, artistically surreal.”

Rossio acknowledges that his present inspiration might just have something to do with his childhood. “When I was about 11 years old I stumbled upon a copy of Treasure Island in my grandparents’ Florida room. I still can remember the feeling of the air conditioner, the sun coming through the window and the thrill of seeing the map, and the title page, and that first chapter heading on that book. Form that page on I was hooked.”

His love for great stories only grew as he got older, and he admits he has read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy more than 250 times. “I grew up reading Harlan Ellison, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Robert Louis Stevenson and Theodore Sturgeon. And watching the work of Rod Serling, William Goldman, Paddy Chayefsky, Neil Simon and Robert Towne. Nothing I’ve done so far measures up to those guys. So the challenge remains the same, to someday write something as good as the stuff I read as a kid,” says Rossio.

And somewhere deep inside him that kid still lurks. “Hey, we actually got to smash a full-size ship in half. Snapped it in two. Actually dropped giant cement-filled pipes from a hundred feet high and crushed the sucker. What kid wouldn’t love that?”

Screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio swap sea stories on 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' ..>..> ..>

When we last left effeminate, addle-brained Captain Jack Sparrow—portrayed with scenery-munching glee by Johnny Depp—the pirate was presumed trapped in the netherworld of Davy Jones' Locker, consigned to a fate that involves no end of torture, pathos and a steady diet of ragweed.

While Sparrow may not know his salvation is pending, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio do.
The screenwriting team has penned all three of Disney's theme-park-turned-blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, including May 25's "At World's End." And even though attempting to siphon hints about the grand finale is like sailing on sand, Wizard still attempted to make the scribes walk the proverbial plank.

As the film opens, with Depp's Sparrow imprisoned in a wasteland, cohorts "Will [Orlando Bloom] and Elizabeth [Kiera Knightley] arrive in Singapore in their quest to find and rescue him," offers the duo. (Elizabeth, fans may recall, actually trapped Sparrow on a doomed ship in order to avoid the wrath of the monstrous Kraken.) "The world is suffering at the hands of Lord Cutler Beckett, with Davy Jones on his side. Elizabeth is suffering from guilt, Will from jealousy. And everyone is suffering from the lack of Captain Jack Sparrow."

In "Dead Man's Chest," opposition was around every spin of the compass, with Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) looking to eradicate piracy on the open seas and tentacle-chinned Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), who once raised Sparrow's ship, eager to settle their debt.

For "World's End," both Elliott and Russio maintain the villains may not be so easily spotted. "The fun of a pirate movie is to explore moral ambiguity," they muse. "Each character faces a moment of choice, where their actions could be taken as villainy. Our theme would place the main villain as having selfish pursuits unrestrained by right and wrong. That's a villain who can appear anywhere, from a pirate to a representative of the law."

One such ambiguous player is Sao Feng, an Asian pirate portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). "He's the Pirate Lord of the South China Sea, one of the Nine Pirate Lords that make up the Brethren Court," explain the pair. He sees the end of the era of piracy coming, he see the final stand coming, and desires only to be on the winning side."
That goes double for Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the ghostly apparition that terrorized Depp and company in the first film and returned at the climax of the second to possibly help find Sparrow.

"Geoffrey Rush is our secret weapon," the scribes proclaim. "His contribution was, we believe, vastly underrated on the first film. His character and his performance very much define the flavor of the series."

For the role of Captain Teague, a weather-worn pirate who may or may not be Captain Jack's father, producers indulged Depp's notion that Sparrow was based on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards by actually casting the leathery rocker in the part. "We're not sure there is a 'father' role in the film. The role was written with Keith in mind. But the part, while small, is pivotal enough that if he wasn't available, it would have been re-cast."

Central to the franchise's success has been Teague's maybe-offspring, the braggadocio, skittish Sparrow. And despite the opinion of some of his shipmates, the anti-hero of "Pirates" is no sissy. "Jack Sparrow is in no way a coward," say the writers. "He may take a seemingly cowardly action merely in order to buy time. The secret to the Jack Sparrow character, what makes him powerful, is that the universe is ultimately on his side. Jack knows if he merely survives long enough, eventually the universe will come around and give him an opening. Then he pounces on it."

Sparrow's destiny is likely to lie in the open waters; for star-crossed lovers Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, it may be on the altar. "We will say that both characters undergo transformations," tease Elliott and Rossio. "If you track them across all three movies, those two characters are the ones who change and grow the most."

And despite Sparrow's antics, "We've always felt Elizabeth is the real protagonist of the films."

With the players in motion, Elliott and Rossio turned to a crucial element of any summer movie experience: the expensive set pieces. "Whereas 'Dead Man's Chest' had several action sequences on land—the rolling water wheel, the bone cages—the major set pieces of 'At World's End' take place on the ocean." Expect to see ships in full action mode on water, along with the requisite swashbuckling: One sequence is rumored to take place between Sparrow and Jones on top of a crow's nest during a storm.

And what of a fourth film? "The final two films are designed to complete a trilogy," reply the writers. "A third sequel is dependent on too many factors to make any type of guess right now. It's not impossible to do a fourth film. A lot depends on whether…there is audience desire for more of these."

If the billion-plus dollars in box-office booty for the first two entries are any indication, our forecast is Captain Jack will be back.

Viewers of ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT were treated to a feature on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END during the broadcast on Wednesday, April 25th--one month before the official release of the film in North America.
