Biyografi..

According to Rachael Ray, she grew up in food. "My first vivid memory is watching mom in a restaurant kitchen. She was flipping something with a spatula. I tried to copy her and ended up grilling my right thumb! I was 3 or 4," says Ray, who insists that cooking is a way of life she was simply born into. "Everyone on both sides of my family cooks." Her maternal grandfather grew and cooked everything that his family of 12 needed for sustenance and her dad's family was steeped in the food-rich traditions of Louisiana. The Ray family owned a family restaurant on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Eventually the family relocated to New York, where her mother went to work as the food supervisor for a chain of restaurants upstate. "I was surrounded by all different styles of cooking and worked in the food service industry in just about every capacity you can imagine."

Eventually, she landed at Macy's Marketplace in New York, first at the candy counter and then as the manager of the Fresh Foods Department. She credits her two years at Macy's for giving her an education in gourmet foods. After Macy's, Ray helped open Agata & Valentina, the prestigious New York gourmet marketplace, where she was the store manager and buyer. Seemingly on the NYC food fast track, Ray decided that the lifestyle was exciting, but not what she wanted long term, so she moved back to the Adirondacks.

Once upstate, Ray managed pubs and restaurants at the famed Sagamore Resort on Lake George and was then recruited by Cowan & Lobel, a large gourmet market in Albany, to be their food buyer. Eventually, Ray turned the job into a dual position as food buyer and chef, jobs that she loved. As a way to increase grocery sales during the holidays, Ray began a series of cooking classes, which quickly became a happening. The cooking course promising to teach thirty "30-Minute Mediterranean Meals" became so popular that the local media sent a feature reporter to cover the phenomenon. The following week, WRGB-TV/CBS Albany-Schenectady approached Ray about doing a weekly segment, 30-Minute Meals, for the evening news. Nominated for two regional Emmy's the first year, the show was a major success; a companion cookbook sold 10,000 copies locally during the holidays.

Ray's television work grew to include a series of lifestyle and travel segments following the same theme: you do not have to be wealthy to live a rich life. Today Ray's work in food and travel continues with her popular on the Food Network shows; "30-Minute Meals" and "$40 A Day."

Her successful series of ten cookbooks, all based on the "30-Minute Meal" concept, include 30-Minute Meals, 30-Minute Meals 2, 30-Minute Meals: Get Togethers, Comfort Foods, Veggie Meals, The Open House Cookbook and her most recent introductions - Cooking 'Round The Clock Rachael Ray 30-Minute Meals, Cooking Rocks! Rachael Ray 30-Minute Meals for Kids, Rachael Ray Best Eats In Town On $40 A Day. The new Rachael Ray 30-Minute Get Real Meals was launched on March 29, 2005. During the 2004 holiday season, Ray had five books on the New York Times Best-Sellers List at once!

"My life has been a total accident, a very happy, wonderful accident that I didn't and couldn't have planned," says Ray. Despite her growing celebrity she is determined to stay grounded. She still lives in a cabin in the Adirondacks with her family the "research team," and IsaBoo her beloved pit bull pup. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif

Misafirler yazmış...:)

Hello, 38!
http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/noteBook/grp_edr_rn_AS.jpg
This August, I’m celebrating another birthday! Yeah! I love fresh starts and all the promise that comes with the first day of a new birthday year. Wrinkles? I can buy cream to smooth them out, but I wouldn’t change my age or give back one minute of my life. Good days and bad, it’s been a tasty time so far! I like having birthdays because they humble me. They remind me to be grateful for my life, my family, my friends and my work.
Birthdays challenge me, too. Every year I get a little bit smarter about at least a few things, but the list of what I want to do and learn grows longer. This year, I want to finally learn how to speak Italian fluently, get better at playing the drums and go skydiving—again!
I look forward to new adventures, new travels and,of course, all the great new food along the way!

I know you’re a big Red Sox fan and your husband’s a Yankees fan. How is Isaboo being raised, Red Sox or pinstripes? -Debra Friss, Hanford, CA http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_a.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_a.gif) Isaboo’s a Red Sox fan. The only baseball- or bat-shaped toys she has are Red Sox ones, so I guess John didn’ t care enough to get in there first! Isaboo hasn’t been to a game yet, but I hope to take her to a Cape Cod Baseball League (capecodbaseball.org (http://www.capecodbaseball.org/)) game this summer.. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif) http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif) http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif) http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_q.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_q.gif) What’s your favorite perfume? -Tammy Eady, Pell City, AL http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_a.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/askrr/grp_edr_askrr_a.gif) Maybe Baby, by Benefit. I’m not picky. I like them all. What I use really depends on the cuisine. If we’re talking about Tex-Mex, it’s cumin and assorted chili powders. For Italian food, I don’t use anything other than fresh herbs and salt and pepper. I think a spice that’s getting a lot more use now is smoked sweet paprika; I’ve seen it at regular grocery stores. I use it in all sorts of meatballs and spice rubs. It’ s terrifi c in soups and stews, too. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)

From Every Day with Rachael Ray

http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/glossary/grp_edr_ismsphoto_jj.jpg (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/glossary/grp_edr_ismsphoto_jj.jpg) She's got her own style. She's got her own 30-Minute Meals. And she's got her own way of saying things. You may know Rachaelspeak from watching her on TV—but just in case you get confused, here is a cheat-sheet of Rach's fave expressions. Delish!

http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/glossary/grp_edr_hdr_glossary.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/glossary/grp_edr_hdr_glossary.gif) http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)
EVOO
EVOO is extra-virgin olive oil. I first coined "EVOO" on my cooking show because saying "extra-virgin olive oil" over and over was wordy, and I'm an impatient girl—that's why I make 30-minute meals! http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)
YUM-O!
I say this if something is so good that "yum" just isn't enough of an exclamation. The accent is on the "O" as in, "Oh! That is so good!" http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)
DELISH!
Extra Yum-O! http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)
TWO TURNS OF THE PAN
I write in freehand equivalents because measuring, to me, takes away from the creative, hands-on process of cooking. Two turns of the pan with EVOO is about two tablespoons. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif (http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif)
GOOD TO GO
You're all set.

EYEBALL IT
I measure in my palm and use my eyes to estimate amounts; a tablespoon is a full palm of dried spices. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif
YOUR NOSE WILL KNOW
Cooking is about using your senses. A dish is done when it smells done and looks good to you. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif
EAT WELL, EAT MORE!
Rather than dieting, I live by this rule. If you eat lean meats, lots of veggies and limit (rather than eliminating) your carbs, you can eat lots of food, still fit into your blue jeans and not worry about counting the calories. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif
GH
In recipes designed specifically for kids, this means Grown-up Helper, the big person who acts as assistant to the young chef, handling heavy pots, boiling water and other tasks. It's like having a Designated Hitter, or DH, in baseball. A GH is an important member of any kid's kitchen team. http://www.rachaelraymag.com/images/clear.gif
HOW GOOD IS THAT?
This question is rhetorical. Pat yourself on the back and just start eating.

Rachael RayWhy food snobs should quit picking on her.

(http://www.dizifilm.com/forum/)Rachael Ray may be the world's most reviled chef. Entire blogs are devoted to slamming the perky Food Network superstar—"Rachael Ray Sucks (http://www.livejournal.com/community/rachael_ray_sux/)" is particularly vicious. On Web sites like eGullet, a "society for culinary arts and letters," users say (http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=26521&st=60) she should be "tarred and feathered." And professional chefs, including Slate food writer Sara Dickerman (http://www.slate.com/id/2111851/), turn up their noses when Ray comes around. It's easy to see why: Ray rejects specialty ingredients, elaborate recipes, and other foodie staples. But she deserves our respect. She understands how Americans really cook, and she's an exceptional entertainer.
Ray's marquee program, 30-Minute Meals, relies on countless foodie no-nos. She advocates store-bought shortcuts—"I take a little help where I can get it"—using boxed corn muffin mix for her Cracked Corn and Cheese Squares (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_18852,00.html), and chunky peanut butter in her Thai Salad With Peanut Dressing (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_19523,00.html). She loathes baking—it's too fussy—so her "homemade" desserts are things like Black Cherry Ice Cream With Chocolate Sauce (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_24885,00.html): Buy the ice cream and top with chocolate sauce and a dash of cherry liqueur (Reddi-Wip is optional). Her dishes rely solely on items available at the local Safeway. And she's no stranger to fast food: She endorsed a Burger King chicken sandwich in 2003.
Ray's ditzy demeanor also makes her easy to dismiss. She giggles off-cue and constantly praises her own cooking. "Smells awesome already!" she says, making her Snapper in a Snap. "I ** so psyched about that." She employs kitschy abbreviations—EVOO means "extra virgin olive oil"—and gives her menus corny nicknames like You-Won't-Be-Single-for-Long Vodka Cream Pasta (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_19792,00.html). The acknowledgments in her $40 a Day cookbook read like a high-school yearbook: "Don …You are the tallest man we've ever had on crew, and yet you pack the smallest bag—ever! Cool." And it didn't boost her credibility when she posed for pinup shots in FHM (http://www.insignificantthoughts.com/files/RachaelRayCollanderSmall.jpg). (One featured Ray licking chocolate off a spoon.) When the magazine hit newsstands, she said, "I think it is kinda cool for someone who is goofy, and a cook, just a normal person to be thought of in that way."

These days Ray is hardly "normal"—she's a multimedia queen. Since Ray joined the Food Network in 2001, she's slowly taken over. In addition to 30-Minute Meals, she hosts the travel show $40 a Day and gossips with celebrities on Inside Dish. According to the New York Times, Ray wrote four of this year's 10 best-selling cookbooks. When she touted Wüsthof's Santoku knife (http://www.cutleryandmore.com/large/645.jpg), sales spiked; she now endorses her own blade (http://www.furitechnics.com.au/). And this fall, she'll have a magazine: Every Day with Rachael Ray. Just like Oprah and Martha!
To her credit, Ray has always cast herself as a sort of anti-Martha, offering options for those who want to save money, eat healthfully, and cook at home but don't have the time or budget to entertain the Turkey Hill way. Too busy to hunt down authentic ingredients at ethnic markets? Make Chicken Curry in a Hurry (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_20825,00.html) instead. She also offers quick versions of slow-cooked classics like stew or chicken and dumplings, so working parents can still serve comfort foods on cold winter nights.
Ray's 30-Minute shtick is simple, but inspired. Regular cooking shows are rife with annoying you'll-never-be-able-to-replicate-this moments. When the chef begins, meticulously prepared ingredients lie at the ready; he breezes through instruction and then—poof!—pulls out the perfect frittata that's been waiting in the oven. Ray cooks in real time, so you know what you're in for.
The show is also fantastically entertaining. It's suspenseful: As the minutes tick by, Ray becomes frenetic—will she finish? (She always does.) And it's educational: As Ray trims her asparagus and frantically wraps prosciutto around the green stems, she offers tips. Use a "garbage bowl" to collect debris as you're cooking. Chop chicken into small pieces so it cooks faster. Roll citrus before you cut it, and you'll extract more juice. Forget about measuring—"Eyeball it!"

For years, I devoured the show, and Ray and I enjoyed a problem-free relationship. But as she became more popular and her detractors became more vocal, I realized that if I wanted to defend her, I should try a few of her recipes. You can imagine my dismay when, 21 recipes later, I was forced to admit that I could not complete a 30-Minute Meal in 30 minutes. Ray's four-course "Cooking for 10 in 30 Italian Style" menu took me a frenzied one hour, 25 minutes, and 57 seconds. Though the food was very good, I came away exhausted and with a burnt finger. My most successful effort was Ray's "Back in the Day" menu: Super Sloppy Joes (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cooking/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_23182,00.html), Deviled Potato Salad, and Root Beer Floats. I prepped with the same care as Ray—produce pre-rinsed, garbage bowl at the ready, pantry items near at hand—but it took me 49 minutes and 51 seconds (and I skipped the Root Beer Floats). Where had I gone wrong? For a while, I suspected Ray of cutting corners. Was an army of interns frying chicken during commercials? But then I learned that Ray didn't start out on TV. Her first "30-Minute Meals" were devised for a series of cooking classes that she taught at Cowan & Lobel, a gourmet grocery store in Albany, N.Y. (The classes eventually earned her a regular spot on the local news.) Back then, Ray prepared her meals for a live audience, which means she couldn't cheat: She had to rely on smart kitchen choreography. Ray may have a crack production team at her disposal today, but she still exhibits considerable logistical acumen.
Unlike most celebrated chefs, Ray seems to have spent more time in supermarkets than cooking in restaurant kitchens. She started out working the candy counter at Macy's Marketplace in New York and then managed the fresh foods department there; later she became a manager and buyer for Manhattan grocer Agata & Valentina. That's probably why she's so good at adapting gastronomy for the masses: She knows how real people shop and eat.
Her Super Sloppy Joes certainly aren't haute cuisine, but that's no reason for highfalutin chefs to knock her. Consider what Ray brings to the table: Creativity, adeptness, speed. Her skills are as estimable as those of any Michelin-star-winning chef, and they're far more practical. I may have abandoned my Rachael Ray time trials, but I'm still making "30-Minute Meals." And you know what? They do smell awesome.

This morning show premiered to little fanfare on the WB in 2002. Mitch (Mitchy-poo) English, the star of the show, is a high-energy weatherman, and the two other main hosts Ron Corning (the "straight man", though he participates in the joking quite a bit) and Andrea Jackson, a short haired cutie round it out. It's geared towards a younger crowd, there's heavy emphasis on the hosts chatting about the day's topics after each segment of news/entertainment is read, and viewer participation is high, with the "Buzz Topic of the day" (yours truly has cracked up the hosts many times with many obnoxious telephone calls) Things that are good about the show, is the sports segments are held to a minimum, and often times they include the camerapeople in on the action, usually Mitch English is the instigator of ab-libbing and out of control pranking. The highlight of the entire run so far is when Mitch English was playing "Dysfunctional Family Feud" and ran and broke a very piece of expensive glass, accidentally during the live show. Mitch's bits throughout the show include "Mitch's World" (think News of the Weird) and on Friday's, "Ebay or Not", something you have to see to appreciate. The only complaint I have about the show is it's not closed- captioned, at least the non-ad libbed bits would be appreciated.

http://www.popcrazy.com/images/rachaelray1.jpg Rachael reaches for a mai tai. She can cook you a meal in 30 minutes and travel the world on $40 a day, but what does Rachael Ray listen to when she wants to rock out? The Food Network's newest (and perhaps only) diva gives Popcrazy some noshing tips, her thoughts on go-gurt, and a sneak peak at her new show.
What would you eat if you only had $5 a day?

Rachael Ray: I would buy a bloody mary at happy hour -- gazpacho with a kick.
What would you buy if your food budget were unlimited?

Rachael Ray: I'd take 50 homeless people to dinner at Ducasse for $500.00 a head.
Do you prefer eating out to cooking a meal when you're off the clock?

Rachael Ray: No. John and I make dinner at home. (He's dessert.)
If you're going to a potluck dinner, what's the ace up your sleeve?

Rachael Ray: Italian Mac-n-cheese: four cheeses, sausage, tomatoes, yummo. It makes grown men cry. The recipe is in Get Togethers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1891105116/ref=nosim/popcrazy) in the chapter devoted to food to eat while watching football. You can also get it off the Food Network website.

Smith. Eclectic mix, I guess. http://www.popcrazy.com/images/rachaelray3.jpg Rachael shows off her wild side. When you go on a road trip, eating is always tricky. You get fast food at rest stops and no exercise. What's the best diet for a road trip?

Rachael Ray: I like raw nuts, fruit, and baby carrots for crunchy car snacks. Gum keeps my jaws busy as well. I drive into town off exits that look promising, rather than eating at rest areas. Restaurants in town will have healthier choices.
What was the first meal you learned to make? (Not like spaghetti -- the first real dish.)

Rachael Ray: I made lasagna roll ups filled with spinach and artichokes and topped with a Gorgonzola sauce. I also had asparagus and prosciutto on the side. The dinner was for my mom. I was 11, I think.
Have you ever thought about challenging an Iron Chef? And if so, which one?

Rachael Ray: I like to buy my ingredients at the market, rather than making fresh-kills in my kitchen. I don't have Marimoto's stomach -- I can't chop the head off an eel to make my dinner. These guys are amazing and well beyond my area of cook-spertise. I have no beef or eel with them and I will not be challenging any Iron Chefs any time soon. On the other hand, they say never say never...
(Editor's note: If you agree that an Iron Chef episode with Rachael Ray as the challenger would be beyond fantastic, write to the Food Network (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_tm/text/0,1976,FOOD_9997_8596,00.html)!)

Are you pro-Go-gurt or anti-Go-gurt?

Rachael Ray: If this is that fruity yogurt stuff that you suck out of a plastic tube, I really don't need to see that sort of thing in public. What you suck at home is your business. Do you have a favorite junk food for when you're depressed?

Rachael Ray: I eat everything in any mood. If I ** depressed, I just eat more of it all.
Now that being cheap has made you a superstar do people think you're cheap?

Rachael Ray: They think I ** a lousy tipper. I ** not. I grossly over-tip. I was a waitress for a long time. P.S. I do not think I qualify as a superstar. Please check the guidelines and official handbook.
What is your favorite city to eat in on $40/day?

Rachael Ray: I love NYC, Rome, Austin, TX, Cleveland, OH. They all rock.
You make cheap look good! Have you ever been approached about doing a holiday movie where you play a sassy yet likable female version of Scrooge (http://www.popcrazy.com/features/ladyscrooge.php)?

Rachael Ray: Got a script? I'll read.
With your two Food Network shows, $40 A Day and 30 Minute Meals being such big hits, are you opposed to doing shows that don't have numbers in the title?

Rachael Ray: I ** a little superstitious, but I have a third show coming out next year with no numbers in the title. Keep your fingers crossed.
(Editor's note: We heard a rumor that Rachael's third show will involve celebrities cooking for her. We'll keep you posted, because that sounds like something we'd like.)
Do you really eat at Burger King, and if so, how often? And whose fries are better, BK's or McD's?

Rachael Ray: Fries are very tasty at both, but I prefer BK. Yes, I do grab an occasional sandwich there if I ** out and about and it's there. The chicken sandwich with mustard is good. Also, I like a Whopper Jr., no mayo add mustard.

What advice do you have for aspiring television personalities?

Rachael Ray: None. I got my job by a series of accidents. I guess, don't plan out your life too much and take any and every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how surprising the idea may be to you -- with the exception of the XXX industry, that is. Rachael-mania is sweeping the country with two successful Food Network shows (and another one in the making), an ever-growing series of cookbooks, and even a national fast food commercial. Read Rachel's bio (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/rachael_ray/article/0,1974,FOOD_9928_1702057,00.html), and find lots of fun recipes at the Food Network website (http://www.foodnetwork.com/).

In fewer than five years, Rachael Ray, 38, has radically changed the way America cooks dinner. Her perky-girl-next-door swagger, her catchphrases for techniques and her dinner ideology of simpler, less expensive and just in time have sold billions of books and placed her at the top of the talent love heap at the Food Network, which has changed its focus from information exchange to helpful encouragement. Dinner at her house with my kids is tastier than I could have imagined. My boys went wild for the veal, meatball and pasta stoup, as she calls it, and, like her audience, were quickly softened to putty in her kitchen-confident hands, disarmed of their usual ingredient suspicions by Ray's "just try one" allure.
At book signings and public appearances, I have seen her fans faint, tremble, mumble, moan and ultimately hit the front of the line and embrace their food hero, repeating her mantras such as "let's run a knife through it" and "easy peasy" like Catholics at Sunday Mass. Mass—mass appeal—is the message. Ray dresses like a suburban American—not a chef (that is key)—and her ease with basic kitchen techniques and a simple-to-find-in-Topeka ingredient list does not challenge viewers but entices them to join her in the famous "carry the stuff from the fridge to the counter" move with her anti-food-stylist packaged groceries. The promise of a meal in less than 30 min. is delivered every day and is calculated to hit all those who ever had a family or thought of having one, coaxing them to eschew the trap of fast-food facility and truly cook—even the easy fast stuff—at home.

Rachael Ray's Food Faceoff!
January 19, 2006
Has RACHAEL RAY met her match? The Food Network maven appears for the first time on "Iron Chef America," teaming up with Chef MARIO BATALI to take on competing Chefs BOBBY FLAY and GIADA DE LAURENTIIS in the Kitchen Stadium -- and ET is there for all the action!
"It was so intense!" Rachael tells ET. "That hour felt 30 times faster than my 30-minute meals. It went by so fast!"
When season three of "Iron Chef America" debuts February 26 on the Food Network, the host of such shows as "30-Minute Meals" and "Tasty Travels" steps into unknown territory -- and she was not looking forward to it.
"I was really nervous; I'm not a chef," says Rachael. "I don't belong on 'Iron Chef.' To be asked was honor enough, but I really didn't want to do it. Then I thought about it and I said, 'You're so frightened of that show, why don't you give it a shot. Food's food; so, you can't do fancy; you can do tasty!'"
Equipped with the secret ingredient of the day, Rachael and Chef Mario must scramble and put together various dishes using the ingredient as the 60-minute clock ticks away. Then, a panel of judges taste the dishes and rate them on flavor as well as presentation.
"It was really nerve-wracking making the food, but I though that the judging would be even more nerve-wracking," says Rachael, "and the judging was so much fun. I just really started enjoying the process once it got to the judging part."
So, considering it wasn't so bad after all, would Rachael appear on "Iron Chef America" again? "I think I'm safer in my little, simple kitchen where all I have to make are burgers and chit-chat for 30 minutes," she says with a smile. "My stomach is still flip-flopping. I don't know if I have the nerve for it."
Watch ET for more with Rachael Ray -- and see what went wrong in the "Iron Chef" kitchen!

LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y.
AT the stove in her little cabin in the Adirondacks, about a dozen miles from where she graduated from high school in 1986, Rachael Ray spent a night last week making pasta with sweet Italian sausage and canned pumpkin.
Skip to next paragraph (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/19/dining/19rach.html?ex=1287374400&en=968f524b08f8c969&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss#secondParagraph) http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2005/10/19/dining/19rach2.jpg Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times
Elsa Scuderi, Rachael Ray's mother, in the work shed at the cabin they own in the Adirondacks. Ms. Ray's success helped pay for the new landscaping.

With her mind more on conversation than cooking, Ms. Ray cut a nice gash in her thumb. She bandaged it up, laughed it off and kept chopping.
Even with her wound, wine breaks and the start of a dozen stories she would never quite finish, the dish took half an hour.
Her mother, Elsa Scuderi, who is 71 and lives in the cabin, walked in from the garden when dinner was almost ready.
"Did you burn something?" Ms. Scuderi asked.
"No, mamacello, I didn't burn anything," Ms. Ray replied. She flashed the wide grin that critics of her performances on the Food Network compare to that of Batman's nemesis, the Joker.
Though the nation's food elite might cringe, Ms. Ray, 37, is one of the most influential people cooking today. Let the big-name chefs fuss with foams and sous vide. She'll stick with hot dog nachos and "jambalika," a dish that is kind of like jambalaya. With more than 4 million books in print and four shows on the Food Network, Ms. Ray has shown America the way back to the kitchen.
As she likes to say, "How cool is that?"
Most of the thousands of recipes Ms. Ray has "canoodled" over the years were written in her cabin. She rented it 13 years ago and has lived there off and on with her mother and, sometimes, her younger brother, since. Some months she could barely put together enough money to cover the $550 rent.
"It was check-to-check living," Ms. Ray said.
She had grown up around Lake George, but the cycle of small-town life and low-paying jobs was wearing thin. In 1995, Ms. Ray headed to New York City. She worked first at the Macy's Marketplace candy counter and moved up the ranks quickly, learning about everything from buying cheese to how to shop for Liza Minnelli's holiday food gifts. When Macy's tried to promote her to a buyer in accessories, she moved to Agata & Valentina, the specialty foods store.
She stayed in the city for only two years. After a bad break-up, a broken ankle and a violent mugging in front of her Queens apartment that left her scraped and shaken, she headed home.
Ms. Ray moved back into the cabin and eventually landed a job at the fanciest food and equipment store in Albany. She was a buyer and a cook, preparing hundreds of pounds of food every day. As a holiday promotion, she developed a class to help people get dinner on the table in half an hour.
It caught on, so Ms. Ray started teaching the concept at a chain of local grocery stores and on a Schenectady television station. Anywhere they would let her, really. By 1998, she figured she could sell a companion cookbook, so she talked an independent Manhattan publisher into turning her pile of photocopied recipes into a book.
Then her moment arrived.
In 2001 a Food Network executive heard Ms. Ray cook on an upstate public radio show. The same week, a "Today" show producer saw her book and called.
Ms. Ray and her mom drove nine hours south in a snowstorm, and she nailed the "Today" show appearance. The next day, she said, the Food Network signed her to a $360,000 contract to teach America what she had been teaching the folks upstate.
The first thing she did was to reupholster the old family furniture in the cabin. Then she bought the place.
In the four years since, with not much more than her outsize personality and tenacity, Ms. Ray has built an empire. She has nearly 4.5 million books in print, a $6 million book contract with the Random House imprint Clarkson Potter, and four shows in regular rotation on the Food Network. In addition to "30 Minute Meals," she cooks with celebrities on "Inside Dish" and offers inexpensive food travel tips on "$40 a Day." Its companion, "Tasty Travels," went on the air in August. In the network's 12-year history, only "Iron Chef America" had a debut with higher ratings.
This week, her food and lifestyle magazine, Every Day With Rachael Ray, will go on sale. Already, more than 800,000 copies have been ordered for stores and newsstands. Next week, she will introduce her 11th book, "365: No Repeats," which takes the 30-minute concept and offers a different dish for each day of the year. "That was the stupidest idea I ever had," Ms. Ray said. "That many recipes nearly killed me."
