Romantik komedilerin usta kalemlerinden Marc Lawrence’ı, Aşka İki Hafta’da yönetmen koltuğunda da sınama şansı yakalamaştık. Variety’nin haberine göre Lawrence aynı koltuğa dönüyor.

Warner Bros.’un yapımcılığında beyazperdeye gelecek olan Music and Lyrics by’ın senaryosunu yazacak ve yönetmenliğini üstlenecek olan Lawrence yeniden Hugh Grant’le çalışmayı tercih etmiş. Grant’in yanına ise sarışın bir güzeli, Drew Barrymore’u yakıştırmış.

Bir şarkı sözü yazarı ve bestecinin ortak çalışmalarının aşka dönüşeceği romantik komedinin çekimlerine 27 Mart’ta New York’ta başlanacak. Filmin yıl sonuna doğru sinemalarda olması düşünülüyor.

Hugh Grant’in ismini ilk nerede duyduğumuzu hatırlayalım. Özellikle “Sense and Sensibility” ve “Nine Months”, Grant’i çok parlak bir geleceğin beklediğini, süper yıldızlar arasına girmekte hiç de zorlanmayacağını gösteriyordu. Her şey böyle tıkır tıkır işlerken, 1995’te, Grant’in tam da şöhretin tadını çıkarmaya başlayacağı o yılda, hiç kimsenin tahmin etmeyeceği bir şey oldu

Bu olayı artık hepinizin bildiğini tahmin ederek hikâyeyi burada kesmek ve Grant’in 1995’te yaşadığı bu olaya kadar başından neler geçtiğine bir bakmak, önyargılarımızı kuşanmadan önce onu daha iyi tanımamızı sağlayabilir:

Şanssız başlangıçlar şansa dönüşüyor...

Hugh, birkaç filmini izleyen herkesin tahmni edebileceği gibi Londra doğumlu. Sanatçı olan babası, istediği işten para kazanamayacağını anlayınca, ticaretten para kazanmak zorunda kalmış, annesiyse bir öğretmenmiş. Herhalde kendileri yaşamlarının bir bölümünde epey geçim sıkıntısı çekmiş olduklarından olsa gerek, oğullarının iyi bir eğitim alması ve sıkıntı çekmeyecekleri mesleklere sahip olmaları için ellerinden geleni yapmışlar. Hugh’un Oxford gibi dünyanın en iyi üç üniversitesinden birine girebilmek için burs kazanmasını ve kardeşinin de iyi bir bankacı olduğunu göz önüne alırsak, amaçlarına ulaştıklarını da söyleyebiliriz. Oxford’a sanat tarihçisi olma amacıyla gelen Grant, üniversitenin ilk yıllarında dramaya merak sarınca kendini birden tiyatro sahnesinde bulmuş. O yıllarda dersleri boşverip peş peşe bir sürü oyunda rol alan Hugh’un unutamadığı bir de kötü anısı var: Bir oyunda söylemesi gereken “If They Could See Me Now” şarkısında yanlış giriş yapıp yeniden başlamak zorunda kalmış ve genelde öğrencilerden oluşan izleyiciler bu hatasına bolca kahkahayla karşılık vermiş. Hâlâ bitmek bilmeyen kahkahaların kulağında çınladığını söylüyor. Yine de bu tür küçük tatsızlıklar onu oyunculuktan soğutmamış olacak ki, henüz öğrencilik yıllarında Michael Hoffman’ın “Priviliged” adlı filminde rol alarak sinemaya da geçiş yapmış. Bu kadar verimli geçirdiği öğrencilik yılları bitince, pekçok yeni mezun gibi ne yapacağını bilemez halde boşluğa düşen Hugh, bir süre kararsızlık yaşadıktan sonra, 'Jockeys Of Norfolk’ adlı komedi skeçleri yapan bir tiyatro grubuna katılmış. Her ne kadar iyi bir başlangıç yapsalar da adlarını duyuramayıp bu grubu dağıtmak zorunda kalmışlar. Hugh açısından olaya bakacak olursa “iyi ki de dağıtmışlar” diyebiliriz. Tam “bu işin içine girdim” diyeceği bir anda, Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Daniel Day-Lewis gibi usta oyuncularla birlikte yer almak için seçildiği “The Bounty” filminin çekimleri için Tahiti’ye giderken, Aktörler Sendikası’na üye olmadığından, hem uçağa alınmamış, hem de filmden ayrılmak zorunda kalmış. Bu şanssızlıktan sonra, bir süre şansını TV’de deneyen, Martin Shaw ve Max Von Sydow’la birlikte oynadığı “The Last Place On Earth” gibi başarılı dramaların da yer aldığı dizi ve de filmlerde rol alan Grant, yazının başında bahsettiğimiz 1987 yapımı “Maurice” ile nihayet “artık bu sektörde ben de varım” diyebildi. Bu filmle 1992 yapımı “Acı Ay” arasında geçen dönemde, kız arkadaşı Elizabeth Hurley’in de aktrisliğe başlamasına vesile olan “Rowing with the wind” (1987), Chopin’i canlandırdığı “Nocturnes” (1988), John Hurt’le birlikte oynadığı “La Nuit Bengali” (1988) ve Bram Stoker’dan uyarlanan “The Lair Of The White Worm” gibi pek de önemli olmayan filmlerde rol aldı; vakit buldukça TV projelerinde de yer almayı sürdürdü. “Nocturnes”den sonra ikinci kez Chopin’i canlandırdığı ve Judy Davis’le birlikte rol aldığı “Impromptu”daki (1991) başarısıyla adeta 90’lardaki çıkışının sinyallerini veriyordu.

Bitmeyen kafa karışıklığı

Ancak, Oxford’u bitirdikten sonraki kafa karışıklığı bir türlü geçmiyordu Grant’in. Pek parlak olmayan filmlerde yer aldığı dönemde de, yazının girişinde bahsettiğimiz “Dört Nikâh Bir Cenaze”den sonraki pırıltılı döneminde de yaptığı işle bir türlü barışamadı: “Oyunculuk bir tür şaka gibi; ben de oyunculuğa daha ciddi şeylere geçmeden önce biraz eğlenmek için girmiştim; tam bırakacakken ‘Dört Nikâh Bir Cenaze’de oynamak gibi bir hata yaptım ve şimdi olanlara bakın” diyordu genç aktör. Belki hızla gelen bu şöhretin, belki de bunaldığı yoğun çalışma temposunun yarattığı stresin etkisiyle Hugh Grant, Hollywood basamaklarını tırmanmaya başlayan hiçbir yıldız adayının yapmayacağı bir hata yaptı. “Dokuz Ay” filminin tanıtımı için günlerdir yaptığı onca röportajın yorgunluğunu atma bahanesiyle (daha sonra genelde bu bahanenin arkasına saklandı), bir fahişeyle kimilerine göre 20, kimilerine göre 50 dolar karşılığında arabasında birlikte oldu; daha doğrusu olma girişiminde bulundu. Bunun bir hata olup olmadığını veya insanların fantezilerini gerçekleştirmede bu denli toplumsal baskıyla karşılaşmalarının ezici etkisini tartışmak bu yazının konusu değil. Bizim, konu gereği asıl ilgilendiğimiz, Grant’in kariyerinin bu olayla birlikte birden inişe geçeceği şeklinde bir hava yaratılmış olması. Her ne kadar 1,180 dolar para cezasına çarptırılsa ve iki yıllık gözetim süresiyle şartlı tahliye edilse de, Hugh başlangıçta Hollywood yapımcılarının popülist korkularından nasibini aldı. Ancak Grant, hatasının altında ezilmedi. Korkusuzca TV programlarına çıktı ve kendini, kafa karışıklıklarını anlatmaya çalıştı. Leno Show gibi, Grant’in katıldığı talk showların ‘rating’ rekorları kırmasıyla yapımcılar halkın onu dışlamadıklarını anladılar ve yeni projelerle kapısını çaldılar. Yıllar önce “Aşık Shakespeare” filmi için yapılan oyuncu seçimlerinde kendisini beğenmeyen Julia Roberts’la birlikte rol aldığı “Notting Hill”le (1999) büyük bir çıkış yapan Grant, “Mickey Blue Eyes”da (1999) tutmuş formüldeki karakteri oynamayı sürdürse de Woody Allen’ın “Small Time Crooks”unda ve “Bridget Jones’un Günlüğü”ndeki rolleriyle artık ‘romantik komedilerin aşkını belli edemeyen adamı’ olmanın ötesine geçmek istediğini belli ediyordu. Nitekim geçtiğimiz yıl izlediğimiz “Bir Erkek Hakkında” (“About a Boy”) filminde de kadınların canını yakan bir bekârı canlandıran Grant, romantik, kekeleyen aşık imajını silmeye kararlı olduğunu gösterdi. “Bir Erkek Hakkında”nın bir başka özelliği de Grant’in yaşamındaki kafa karışıklığını yansıtabildiği bir film olması. Geçtiğimiz hafta BBC'nin sabah haberlerine konuk olan Hugh Grant, özel hayatıyla ilgili yöneltilen bir soruya sinirlenince programın sunucusu Kate Silverton'a küfür etti.

Silverton'un "Jemima Khan ile evlenmeyecek misiniz?" sorusuna çok sinirlenen ünlü İngiliz aktör, "Bana bu soruyu sormaya nasıl cesaret edersiniz" diye bağırıp, ağza alınmayacak küfürler savurarak programı terk etti.

İlk görüşte Britanya'yı akla getirenleri sayın: Kraliçe Elizabeth, kırmızı telefon kulübeleri ve 1994'ten beri Hugh Grant.

Uzun bir aradan sonra Britanya sinemasını tekrar uluslararası pazara açan romantik komedi "Four Funerals and a Wedding/Dört Nikah Bir Cenaze", (Mike Newell, 1994) sinema tarihinde en yüksek gişe hasılatı yapan Britanya filmi payesi almanın yanı sıra Hugh Grant'i de romantik komedilerin İngiliz yüzü olarak tescillemişti.

O dönemi yıllar öce ardında bırakan Hugh Grant, Music and Lyrics/Söz ve Müzik'te (Marc Lawrence) gözden düşmüş Britanyalı bir pop yıldızı, 1980'lerin revaçtaki gruplarından Pop'un as elemanlarından Alex rolünde. Artık sahneye sadece 80'ler nostalji gösterileri vesilesiyle çıkan ve bu durumu alaycılıkla kanıksamış bir karakter. Dört Nikah Bir Cenaze'nin sıradışı popülerliği, Grant için basmakalıp rollere takılı kalma tehlikesini de beraberinde getirdi. Yine Richard Curtis imzalı bir senaryodan çekilen Notting Hill/Aşk Engel Tanımaz, Hugh Grant'in kariyerini yenileyen ve üç aşağı beş yukarı Dört Nikah Bir Cenaze'nin formülünü yineleyen bir aşk hikâyesi. Bu seferki ulaşılmaz ABD'li kadın, film çekimi için Londra'ya gelen Hollywood yıldızı Anna Scott (Julia Roberts). Ona huzurlu, sıcak, daha genel bir ifadeyle, 'ABD'den farklı' Britanya'da rehberlik etme görevi de yine Hugh Grant'in. Grant, bu sefer Londra'nın Notting Hill semtinde bir kitap dükkânı sahibi. Zaten Aşk Engel Tanımaz sonrasında Grant pek de tür değiştirmedi. Kendi kendini rezil edebilme yeteneği, daha çok komedi filmi yapımcılarının işine yaradı. Sırasıyla Mickey Blue Eyes/Belalı Aşk'ta, (Kelly Makin) bir mafya babasının kızıyla evlenmeye karar verdiği için başına gelmedik kalmayan Britanyalıyı canlandırdı. Woody Allen imzalı suç komedisi Small Time Crooks/Ufak Sahtekarlıklar'ın bol yıldızlı kadrosundaydı.

Hugh Grant, bestseller uyarlaması Bridget Jones'un Günlüğü'nde (Sharon Maguire) "gıcık" karakteri oynayarak, komedi yeteneğinin esas oğlanın haricini de kapsayabileceğini gösterdi. Bu yeteneğini sonraki filmlerinde de gani gani kullandı. Yine revaçtaki bir başka Britanyalı Nick Hornby'nin romanından perdeye getirilen About a Boy/Bir Erkek Hakkında'nın (Paul Weitz) bencil, çalışmayan, hâlâ 20'lerinde gibi davranan 40'lık kahramanı Will'i tam kendi bedenine uydurdu.

Politik taşlama American Dreamz'de, (Paul Weitz) reality show sunucusu rolünde sevimsiz tarafını bir kez daha gösterme fırsatı buldu.

Şimdi Söz ve Müzik'te yine sevimli haliyle karşımızda. Üstelik Bir Erkek Hakkında'da şarkı söyleyip kendini rezil ettiği sahnenin benzerinden de art arda geliyor. Hugh Grant, çoğunlukla romantik komediyle sınırlanmış olmaktan hiç gocunmayarak yoluna devam ediyor. Gerçi, zamanında oyunculuğun hiç de çekilir bir meslek olmadığını söylemiş ama her oyunundan zevk alır bir hali var. Onu, hep aynı karakteri oynamakla itham edenlere inat tüm rollerinin keyfini çıkarıyor. Bunu da çoğunlukla kendisiyle dalgasını geçerek yapıyor. Belki de göründüğü her romantik komediyi izletebilmesi ve bu türde ısrarının sebebi, seyirciye de yansıyan zevkidir.

Su ana kadar burundugu tum rollerden bir parcayi bu rolde yansitmis. Sanki biriktirmis biriktirmis ve bu rolu beklemis gibiydi. Komedi unsurunun yaninda cok romantik ve hassas bir Hugh izledim ben. Biri ya da digerinin on planda oldugu rolllerinden sonra sicak, derin ama bir o kadar da komik olmayi bu kadar kolayca yapmasindan cok etkilendim. Beni beklemedigim kadar sasirtti. Karsimda her zamanki komik ama derin olmayan, keyif alacagim ama etkilenmeyecegim Hugh beklerken guzel bir suprizle karsilastigim icin cok memnunum.
